well its been around 50 degrees up here in indiana for the last few days, decided to get the mustang out even though theres still a lot of road salt on the roads. i figured what the hey, im ready to pull her out of the garage n run it for a while. well all is well, had a fun day just hangin with friends, got home and decided to wash off all the road salt and grime from the dirty roads. not a big deal till i got to my wheels. its mainly on my rear wheels, but there was a ton of road salt on them. i tried windex cuz its all i have as of now, but theres still some salt on them, makes the chromw look kinda faded, and its rough to the touch. i know im prolly being anal about it but these are my new wheels, dont wanna ruin them. anyone know a good cure to road salt on chrome wheels?

go to the part store, buy a can of never dull its in a stainless steel, and black print can. about 5 bucks, make sure rims are dry, apply let sit to a haze wipe off. best thing ever for chrome since electroplateing!

i have yet to find some one else who when changing their oil ( every 2000 miles or when they get bored ) details the under side of their car.
X-C April 2010,Heads, Cam,Internals April 2011, or blown engine, witch ever comes first.
The transformation has begun!
I do not live where they lay down the salt but if it were me the first thing I would have done is get a bucket full of car wash and just wash them that way and see it that takes it off. If they were fine prior to driving I would think the salt would pretty much wash off after you wash the rims. But I may be wrong I live in California.

Power in the hands of a few
I agree with all replies so far, am well versed, humbly, and a bit of a road salt as well as Summertime calcium & lime expert which is almost the same thing.
Calcium in highway construction ruined a set of new wheels I had too. What I mean, is it ate through the clear coat immediately, devoured it onsite, and then left me with pock marks in the magnesium/aluminum for the rest of my 2,000 mile trip before I could do anything.
I ended up bringing the matter to my Insurance Company, though few would do that, I was in the Industry at the time - a MVA crash investigator or car dynamics, structural physics & repairs engineer. Not on topic, but when I write my profile, I was moved from that specific line of duty and promoted to assesssing people's trauma and bodily injuries, because of how we were compatible, and I assisted in "human services", rescue and medical services at vehicle emergencies.
As the respondents have advised, all we can do is use any or many good polishes, and go at it industriously, and settle for the best result that can be achieved. After many polishes are tried, jeweler's rouge is the finest thing we can obtain for buffing, with a Dremel tool or by hand.
Try a clay bar and always make sure you have a coat of wax on your wheels

they always have some good wax on them, i guess that road salt is just some mean stuff. i got some cleaner wax today, im gonna try the clay bar first though. then the wax... mayb try a little sos pad

the pad worked, but it wasnt a regular pad. it was kind of like a hard rubber dish pad, worked like magic, im very happy with how they look now. thanks for all the input

It isnt for everyday use. It will literally clean ANYTHING off chrome or aluminum. Including plastic coatings, wax, you name it. Its fine to use it but wax immediately afterwards and preferably with paste wax. If you dont look forward to a future of weekly recleaning or massive corrosion.
If it were me id take it to a touchless car wash to have allthat salt blasted off then handwash the wheels and possibly the whole car. You dont say how valuable this car is.. if its a 65 classic or something thats definitely the route id go. If it were mine (2003 gt convertable) id run it through the touchless a couple times making sure to get the underside blasted repeatedly then handwash the wheels with maguires.
no clue what the name of that pad is, haha just a dish pad i stole from the sink. got the salt off then i used some mothers chrome polish, worked great!

Thats the first thing that popped into my head when I read this. Got this stuff for christmas and it works wonders. I used it on my exhaust and wheels today and they came out great.
