Default Electric Buffers - Any advice??

Im looking to get a good shine this spring on my 94 Cobra. I am thinking about getting an electric buffer. Has anyone used one before? Were you happy with the results? What brand/style did you have?

Oh, and I googled a little bit on the topic, and everyone seems to used buffing compound. I accidentally used some a while back and it actually stained my clearcoat. I meant to used polishing compound but grabbed the wrong one. Can I use anything else?

unless you plan on doing a lot of cars, you will be money ahead to pay someone to do it. a GOOD buffer like a dewalt dw849 will cost you close to 300.00. by the time you buy wool and foam pads, compounds, glazes and waxes you can 500.00 easy. and don't forget about what happens when you use the wrong compound!

oh yea, 3M hand glaze 05990 will fix your compound snafu.

unless you know what you are doing, i would recommend a random orbital, turtle wax has a 10 inch one with a carrying case an all for about 40 dollars, with a real buffer, polisher if you dont know what you are doing you will end up with swirl marks and burned paint very very easily buffers/polishers are really for compunds and heavy abrasive pastes, just for regular waxxing and polishing a random orbital will be perfect

A buff in the hands of a untrained person can very easy end in a needed paint job. BUT if you are gone to do it run it at low speeds and stay off high spots and edges and keep moving the friction will warp metal and burn paint. trust me I know, seen it happen many times and have done it. Body & paint man for years.

Good advice. I have seen the same thing. Porter Cable makes a good one for around $180 not sure of the model # but that one is supposed to work out real well.
