Meguiar's Leather Cleaner/Conditioner wears out the leather color?
Hey guys,
I just bought a Meguiar's Leather Cleaner/Conditioner, it's my first car with leather, so at first I wiped my seats with a damp towel to remove the dust, then I put a little bit of the leather liquid on another towel and wiped through my seats.
I noticed that the towel began to turn slightly darker (a bit of light black and grey).
So I wasn't sure if the product was wearing out the color of the seats (because I have the 2 tone Black/Grey leather)
OR it was cleaning the seat bcz it was a bit dirty.
So I was wondering, is there any probability that this product might ruin my seats? Or wears them out?
Thanks in advance for your replies, I really need some guidance before it's too late !

Try your same procedure on a area of the seat that is not likely to be dirty, maybe on the lower front part of the seat-just somewhere there hasn't been contact with your clothing, etc. If you see significant color change then that should tell you if the product is removing more than desired. For what it's worth I've been using ArmorAll Leather Protectant("Cleans, Conditions and Protects") on my black seats without any problems.
I know from having a very light parchment leather interior that any kind of dyed pants or clothing, worn often - which... when do you drive your car naked?? .... leaves pigment stains in the leather - my light colored seats are muddy in areas and are due for a cleaning. I have cleaned my seats before and what comes off is the dye left on your seats from your clothing. If you are worried, don't hesitate and call the manufacturer of the product you are using!!

hmmm, the driving naked got my attention. but keep in mind too, only the part of the frt seats you sit on and lean up against is really leather. the bottom frt skirt, the back, the headrests, and the entire rear seat is vnyle. i just installed the oem leather seats, and my g/f makes and installs seat covers, helped me do it and we really checked them out good.( which she told me before they came in the mail). but ya judi, when i had the tan cloth, my jeans were destroying the seats. had to shampoo like every week allmost to keep them clean. ive been looking into some leather cleaners too. ive had good results from the meguiar`s products, but havent tried the leather cleaner yet.

The instructions on the back of the product show that I have to put some of the liquid on a Terry Towel, wipe thoroughly then use a Microfiber towel to wipe the product off.
So is it ok if I use a Microfiber towel as well to "APPLY" the product on the seat?
Thanks! KB

Sorry to not check in yesterday... I would actually use what the instructions say - to a T. That's because if you have a problem, you'd have recourse - and you won't have to cover up your steps.
How about getting a white terry towel from walmart then you'll know it's not the dye from the towel?

And I was wondering, how often do you clean and condition the leather of your car?
I heard people here in WASHINGTON state, they do it every 6 months. Because it's raining approx all the time.
And do you recommend me to apply the liquid on ALL THE SEATS including the back seats? even though very few times people sit in the back of my car?
Or every 2 times I do the front, I do 1 time the back?
Thanks! KB

This is only my opinion - I don't live in an area like you do...
I can tell you what I do - and you might want to listen to others in your area.
My seats are cleaned and conditioned once a year - but this year, they'll be getting cleaned and conditioned 2 times... The one time wasn't enough. It's not critical, tho an important maintenance step!!
Remember... our seats are basically covers - so we can switch the covers out if the seats get really bad... of course, it's costly... so we do everything we can to avoid that.
I'd clean and condition the front 2 times a year... if you feel you don't need it as often, do it once a year... and the back, clean and condition once - you have to check - I read you shouldn't condition without cleaning... so read the directions of your products well and adhere to the instructions!!

Lexol also has a good cleaner and conditioner. I have roush seats and they still look new after all these years.
First lightly vacuum the seats (mostly the bottom where things get in the cracks).
Then spray a small amount of the Lexol cleaner onto a slightly damp cotton polishing pad (same kind used to wax the car). It will make a foamy lather. Then wipe off with a slightly damp microfiber and then a dry one.
Then apply the Lexol conditioner with a new cotton pad to the seats and then wipe with another clean microfiber.
I usually clean and condition them every few months or so. I do all of the seats every time. Even if no one sits back there that often, they still get dirt/dust on them from driving around and having the windows open and what not.
Hope all of this helps!
