How do you fix rust on a seam?

Seems like the seam really complicates things. Below is an example of what I'm talking about. Any thoughts? Solutions?

It's actually not on my Mustang, but is a better pic of some similar situations that I'm facing on the Mustang. It's actually on the trunk lip of a vehicle (right where you would stick your fingers to lift the lid).
