First of all, it is all in the preparation!!! You MUST clean the plastic first. If you have ever used any kind of protectant, ie. Armor All, it MUST be cleaned. Next you need to wet sand all of the pieces that you want to paint. After this, you cannot touch them with your bear hands, the oils from your hands will prevent the paint from adhearing to the surfaces. (Use surgical gloves) You can use any paint, it doesn't have to be vinyl die, albiet that is best. The temperature must be at least 75*F - 90*F to paint or it will not turn out correctly. Using a spray can, just "dust" your first coat or 2. Then by the 3rd and 4th coats you will start to see complete coverage. No more than 5 coats. 3-4 should do it. If you use more coats it will crack and come off. I have done this to too many vechcles to mention and NEVER had any problems.
Good luck!

Also, if you're using lacquer, which I used to do my 67, you need to spray the can towards a cloth or just something wasteful for about 10-15 seconds(maybe even longer) after shaking the can well. Reason being that I guess there is like a clear-coat mixed in with the paint and when it sits, they seperate in the can, and that's what causes that dripping you were talking about. Also, you want to spray from about a foot away at least, and do it in THIN coats. Make sure one coat is dry before applying another. Also, constantly be moving the can in slow, even strokes. If the can isn't moving, don't be painting with it. If you stop moving the can, stop painting. And like said above, make sure the surface is clean. I've found just using a household cleaner like Windex(though it's for windows) works fine for cleaning off surfaces.
