Title says most of it. I will be degreasing my engine (94 auto) tonight, and planned on doing it at one of those 'wash it your damn self' places, figured spray engine down with the simple green (for cars!) rub/scrub/let-sit/whatever instructions say to do. Then hose it off with water from the high pressure hose. I have done this in my old car without issue but the instructions on the website I was looking at say to wrap some things....pictures would be helpful.
Also, what does this process DO anyway to help? :P
Thanks!

honestly, i work for a carwash company, not a car wash. i deal w/ the soaps and all that good stuff. u dont need to cover anything, promise. that green stuff is to degrease your engine and to get bad dirt off of your car. you can actually spray it all over your car when u do wash ur car, then u just soap it all off, rinse, wax, spot free. its perfect. i do it to my car all the time, we have a self service carwash in our warehouse. everything under the engine should be fun good luck to you!!!
P.S. if you ever wash your car at home, and are not lucky enough to have a water softener, THEN SHAMMEE YOUR CAR CLEAN!!!! never let dry or will RUIN your paint job, also put a coat of wax on it! just advice from your friendly neighborhood carwash tech

So: Simple green the crap out of it, scrub a bit, rinse, wash car like normal?

perfect, idk if that wash will have hot soap, but that is the best. scrub good, and when u spray w/ the soap, get about 4-6 inches away from it and get those baked on spots, then rinse and go vroom vroom
I'm a little worried about my girl over all, looks like she was treated badly before I 'adopted' her. But....I'm going to give her a good new home, and I am betting like any abused horse she is going to have some problems.
Like:
No driver side air bag.
ABS light on (They think its the fuse)
and Check engine light blinked on today and then back off (odd)
But she will be worth it

always worth it hope you can whip into shape. hopefully ur abs is just a fuse, and i woudl head up to local autoparts store and run it even w/o the check engine light is on, just to see if anything pops up. and the airbag, hopefully there is a junkyard or something.
as long as the fuse box has the cover on it, should be water tight, everything else is fine. i've done my car, dad's truck, boss's truck, managers truck, president of company's truck. list goes on and on HA no issues.
I hope Im not too late!! Instincts tell me your alternator and main fuse box as well as your battery should be covered...
Was a bit too dark for me to risk it to be honest. I will take a look and make sure that the fuse box has a lid, and try to figure somthing out for battery but that seems like it should be ok...and now, the noob that I am...gotta FIND the alternator... -ducks- I wish I was more of a gearhead
But we all started somewhere right? Im just starting at the bottom it seems

This is good info to know because I'm washing my car this Saturday morning and was wanting to clean the engine compartment for the first time since I got it.
Shalisk, I'm going to dognap that dog in your avatar! TOO CUTE!

Bwhaha. He smoked a whole bag of crack o__o
Sadly, he is no longer with us :<
But yeah, if someone could post a picture of a engine bay and maybe circle what needs be covered that would be amazingly useful...

Everything under the hood was made to get somewhat wet. What do you think happens when you drive in the rain? I wouldn't use a pressure washer under the hood. Some of them are strong enough to crack/break plastic covers and hoses under the hood. So just use a regular hose, a bottle of simple green, and a brush with long bristles. The only thing you need to stay away from is the spark plugs.
