It's a PITA but hand buff the car with a rubbing compound to get it ready for a wash and wax. The compound will be chalky and cloudy so make sure you remove it all from the paint first!
I use Armor All car wash soap and Collinite 845 Wax!!

Clay bar the car. You will be amazed on how the cars paint feels afterward. Then polish it and then wax it. She will be beautiful.

first off hand wash thoroughly. make sure to use 2 seperate buckets for your wash. one with the clean soap/water and one bucket with just water that is used strictly to rinse your wool mit or whatever you may use to wash the car, Clay bar untill it is silky smooth and imperfection free. follow with a 3 stage wax by hand. then top it off with a quick detail spray. youll be tired when your all done, but youll have a new car shine and a ton of compliments.

I am surprised at the lack of responses here! I know we have some professional detailers on here!!

This is what I do:

  • Wash car with dish detergent (only when I am doing this whole routine, otherwise I just use regular car wash)
  • Polish the car with a good polish
  • Wax the car with a high quality wax
  • If I have enough time, I'll add another layer of wax
  • Seal all the hard work I have done with a good sealant
Because I am chicken to use a machine - my car is done by hand and I think you'll agree the results are pretty darn good...

The more layers of wax gives your cars paint extra protection ... The sealer acts as a shell sealing in all the work you did - the one I use is a wipe on (wait for it to dry) & is supposed to be good for up to a year, but I probably do that routine every 6 months with the season change.

You still have to wash your car - the sealant and layers of wax keeps acidic bird droppings and other goodies from penetrating and staining your paint...

If you are finding your car is dirty the next day you need a few tools!!!

1) California Duster - get the dust off

2) Instant Detailer and Microfibers - spray liberally rotating microfiber and when a little dirty - grab a clean one...

3) A car cover - this helps reduce the overnight dirt & dust quite a bit!

+1 on the clay bar. I've done this a few times over the years and am always impressed with how the paint feels afterwards!

I was gonna say use some dish soap to strip off that wax but you beat me to it! lol.I myself would add one step more than your already great list. After the dish soap....clay the car then onto the rest.

Using instant detailer afterwards always gets off the little stuff and gives you a great shine.People think im crazy because after everytime I wash my car then shammy it I will go back over it with instant detailer. But those same people will always say,"Man that car is always so clean." and that my friend brings a smile to my face.

I know the OP has already gotten married (congratulations, GT_921!) but I will still post my process. I don't do this everytime I wash my car, though. Only when I'm meeting my 'Stang buddies for pictures and stuff.

1. Wash car with dish detergent.
2. Claybar the entire car.
3. Wash the car for a second time with car soap.
4. Use paint cleaner if you have any stains in your paint.
5. Use polish/swirl mark remover if you have swirl marks that you want to hide.
6. Use glaze.
7. Put on a coat of wax and let the car sit overnight.
8. Put on another coat of wax after the last coat has cured.
9. Stand back, admire your work that you are probably sore from and watch other people drool over your car.

If any bird doodie gets on your car, make sure you clean it off immediately, or it could permanently stain the paint.

Also, like Judi said, a California Car Duster is a MUST for inbetween washes. That thing is awesome, but I would advise against using it on an excessively dirty car. I keep a California Duster, instant detailer, and microfibers in my trunk all the time.
