I have gotten bit by the detailing bug pretty hard in the last couple of months and have invested a lot of time in money on detailing my car and truck. With that I've read a lot on various detailing forum and come across many opinions, there is a lot of good info if you sift through it.
Probably the best piece of advise I can think of when it comes to claying a vehicle is to cut the clay bar into 3 equal pieces. That way if you drop a piece you just toss it and move on, that way you don't have to worry about getting all of the crud off of it that it picked up when it hit the ground.
If the clay hits the ground, you should just chuck it, but at the very least cut off the whole "face" of the clay the touched the ground. I doubt you'll catch all of the contaminants by "eye" that could damage your paint. It makes me feel better to know I can just grab another piece and keep working.

I just removed the rear spoiler on my 95 gt and tried to buff out the two mounting marks it left on the trunk lid but had no luck. Would clay bar if used properly take care of this?

Clay bar will remove impurities in the paint, not smooth imperfections. You may need to see a body shop about color sanding then polishing the lid.

OK, so I've added a few things to it. Check my Profile - too many to list here.

More than likely not. Like the above post said a body shop would more than likely have to take care of that.

Claybaring is so outdated now, and let me tell you why. Has everyone heard of the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. Well i have washed and detailed cars professionally for a long time and i have used clay bars as well as other products and nothing compares to the ease and percision that a Mr. clean pad has. you dont have to worry about dirt getting in it and staying because you can wash it off and keep on going. i know its hard to believe but its true. dont hack it till you try it. AND to everyone with a white car, this is for you especially. USE one of these things after you wash your car and just get the pad wet and just run it over your car and youll be amazed i PROMISE. it gets all the dirt out of those fine scratches as well as scuffs and w/e else
I don't know if Mr. Clean will work on tar or not. I have used mineral spirits to clean tar off my vehicles without any problems. As it's petroleum based, it's no different than dripping gas on your car when you fill up. While the occasional drip of fuel won't hurt your paint, I clean the area immediately to eliminate the possibility of any staining. Alternatively, you can use any of the commercially available bug & tar removers.

That is very, very interesting! The only reason I hesitate is because it scratched up my Matte wall paint in the house on a test area where my nephew wiped a boogie... I am a little worried about using it on a car... I may have to test that out on my husbands car...
how do you use a clay bar??? i bought one and was goign to do a weekend detail job, but ended up going up north, but i tried a little spot, and the directions said to spray it with some givin spray, then run it over, but it didnt seem to do anyhting, and without any spray it didnt move???
Check out some detail videos done by the pros on youtube. The clay bar is pretty simple to use.Spray down a small section and lightly rub the clay around. You will feel the grit and when it starts to work off the grit you will be able to tell right away.If you feel like you need to go over the spot again just use some more spray until its to your liking.Just dont let it get dry while rubbing it.They wipe that spot off with a microfiber and move on to the next small area. When you are done follow it up with a good wax,if you dont...you just clayed for no reason.

I am going to try this today.... on a small area of the stang.. I'll write a little review... I can't wait to see the results! And hope it doesn't scratch the car lolololol
Yesterday I washed the 07 and my husbands DD - and I set out to try Mr. Clean Magic Eraser instead of claybar to get rid of little black marks, scuffs, etc....
Saturday, while at a flea market someone scuffed my husbands DD bad enough there were several lines of white (off their vehicle), I was ticked!! So I decided to try the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on the spots - and they came right off... I also tried it on several little black marks that have been on there a while - and they came right off... Two thumbs up to Mr. Clean!!
