Default Funky paint problem... My hood has leprosy.

The paint on the drivers side corner of my hood is looking really foggy and the paint has very tiny hairline cracks which are very close together. It almost looks scaly. There are several spots (the size of a pencil point) that the paint has completely deteriorated exposing bare metal. The whole area is about 4inches square. When the are gets wet the 12inches of paint surrounding the area gets very foggy (almost turns completely white.

My car still has the factory 1993 black paint. This problem started showing it's face about 2 years ago and keeps getting worse. There is no otherspot on the car that has this unusual problem.

Any ideas as to what is causing it?

Some retard probably touched the spot with their hand before it was painted . Either that or something else was on that spot when it was painted , causing the paint to lift . The oil from skin can cause this when bare metal is touched . It starts to set in immedialely . I think if it is just the hood , then you can have just the hood repainted . Since it is black it will match no problem . Either that or there is body filler under that spot .

I know there is no body filler there. It was my fathers car b4 I bought it. He never banged it up. I'm probably going to replace the hood with either a cowl hood or a cobra r hood. It may not be for quite a while but when I do I may have the whole car painted. I may just have the hood touched up to hold me over till I get a new one/paint job.

I worked as a sprayman for a cabinet shop for a few years but I'm not familiar with automotive finishes. Catalyzed laquers, urethanes and varnishes for wood have never reacted that way in my experience.

Thanks for the info Fordgazm

Sounds like the clearcoat is gone. On my dads '91 F150, the clearcoat was comming off on the hood.

It first it was foggy, then it flaked off. Next came the paint and finally it will go down to the primier.

Typical of everyone. The Chevy Chevette went along time ago. Ford actually held out.
