I use sherman williams paint products.

Do you have da sander, scotchbrite, and paint gun?

I would take the rear lights out so it would be a good, clean area to work.

With the paint that bad, I would sand it down passed all the paint and it real bad down passed the primer.
I would clean it real good
spray some primer on it.
paint it
then clear it.

make sure no oil, armor all and you have clean oil free hands.

do you want a more descriptive answer? I can give you a more detail how to. I have worked around a body shop my life.

i have a sander but i guess the best thing to do would be to sand it by hand. would you agree? next im wondering what size grit should i use to strip the paint and primer. i want to get the cleanest surface possible. i will remove the cover to get it as good as i can. thanks.

I suggest you look in the yellow pages for automoblie paint supplies. I don't know where you are from or if you have English Color (i live in dallas, tx). They'd be more than happy to answer all those questions and supply you with matched paint and all the supplies and probably tips you need. Just my .02

fixing paint on a uerathane bumper cover is not one of the easiest things to do ecspecially if the paint is cracked. if it was steel you could just use paint stripper and be done with it. hand sanding is about the only way to do this and not muck it up. wet sand with 250 grit until you get down to the primer and then go to 400 until all the scratches are gone or till you hit plastic, which ever comes first. when your done with that, reprime with some primer filler, aprox. 4 coats and let dry 15 minutes between coats, then let dry for a minimum of 2 hours, and if you tend to get it on kind of heavy, I'd let it dry overnight. then wet sand with 400 until all perfections are out then go to 600 for a finish. make sure your part is clean and dry before spraying your finish on so you dont get any fisheyes or anything. you can put a additive in the paint for flexability if you like. ask your local paint dealer and they will advise you on what you need. This is a time consuming project so dont rush it and you'll be fine. If you have any other questions email me at grumpyhunt@aol.com

oh yea, this is the whole cover not just were the cracks are because the paint will be wavy with low and high spots. although, if its just a crack here and there you can just spot fix it. if you need to know about that e-mail me

I am actually in the process of attempting to repaint 2 ground effects pieces that need replacement on my GT. I visited my body shop and told them that I wanted to attempt to paint them myself (due to $) so they gave me some tips. Basically all the hand sanding stuff is the same as grumpy44, except I have/am started with 400 grit and I am wetsanding the pieces down to the plastic. I was told to then use a denatured alcohol and/or a tack cloth (not at the same time) to completely clean it before I primer it. Then once it is primed, they told me to LIGHTLY sand it and then tack cloth it again before painting. I bought plastikote brand primer, vehicle colorcode matched spray paint (which is technically touch up paint, but for a section (like I am doing) I was told it would be ok), and clear coat. So far I have only gotten as far as the wetsanding, it is time consuming, but basically easy. I will let you know how I make out, hopefully within the next week or so.
