Default Orange Paint

I am doing a father/daughter project 66 Mustang with my 13 year old daughter, I am letting her make a lot of the hoices regarding how we do the car, of course retaining the option to veto her idea if I absolutely have to. She decided she wants the car to be orange. I don't really care for orange, but I wanted to try to find a shade of orange we can both live with. We looked at Mustangs at the Carlisle show last weekend to get some ideas, we both liked the "Competition Orange" paintcode on the newer Mustangs.

I have a question though about some older Mustang paint codes. I saw a very pretty orange 68 Fastback, and on the dealer sheet that was displayed, it showed the paint code as "Signalflare Red".

Another very nice orange Mustang was a 65 coupe, the owner told my daughter the color code was "Poppy Red" which was also known as "Flower Power Red".

Both of these cars were ORANGE yet the paint codes say RED? Is this common? I was thinking maybe the owners had cars that were originally red and repainted them orange.

I know I have seen Poppy Red Mustangs before in magazines, and they are a bright RED, not orange. Can anyone tell me anything about "Flower Power" red and "Signalflare Red"?????

Thanks!

I remember when I was 13 and a guy in my neighborhood restored classic Corvette Stingrays. He had this mid-sixties Stingray convertable that was absolutely drop dead gorgeous. It was painted Burnt Orange with tan leather interior. The color was a very deep, dark orange that had a slightly red tint. I think some of the old Chargers came in that color. Anyway, it doesn't exactly answer your question, but it might serve as a good color that you can both live with.

BTW...I think what you're doing is great. She'll remember this project forever and will have fond memories of the time you spent together on this project.

I have a 96 Ford Ranger that is called Sapphire Blue by Ford, but it is purple.

Go for the orange.

Well what I really need to know, are "Poppy Red", "Flower Power Red", and / or "Signalflare Red" all actually ORANGE colors? I was not sure if the color I was looking at, was the same as the original paint code or not.

My daughter liked the "Poppy Red" Mustang, but if I go buy a gallon of Poppy Red from a paint supplier, will it be the same color I was looking at!?

I liked "Signalflare Red" on the 68 Fastback, but same thing as above, I don't know if the paint code on the build sheet was the same color I was looking at.

We both liked "Competition Orange" on the newer Mustangs and I know that was the original color. Might be the best bet.

I can't really help you out with those color shades, but my recently traded in 02 GT was torch red. At night, under the street lights, it would look orangish in color. Maybe those colors look orangish under certain lighting conditions. Just a thought.

Well we were outdoors at mid-afternoon on a cloudy day, so it wasn't any lighting problems. I'm not color-blind, either.. lol.

I know Ford doesn't always name the color what we would expect, example above is propellerhead's Purple Ranger that Ford named "Spahire Blue".

Seems like I remember the "grabber" colors on the 69/70 Boss Mustangs were named differently, Orange was Yellow and Red was Orange, or something.

I think maybe I need to ask my question in the Classic forum where people with older Mustang's are.

Sorry I don't have any answers for you, but you can't go wrong with the Competition Orange. Also, incase it's of interest, Visus makes some louvers for the '66 I believe and they're going to be available mid-summer. If you get a chance and want to check out their site, it's visuslouvers.com. Jake, the owner, makes some nice products and they come recommended. But Comp Orange with the black louvers sounds sweet to me. Black really accentuates the color.

Thanks High Horseman, we probably will go with the Competition Orange. It is a nice shade of Orange and both my daughter and I liked it.

I personally liked the Signalflare Red better, but she didn't. She liked the Poppy Red better, but I didn't.

This Mustang is a coupe, my personal opinion is that the louvers look great on a fastback, but tacky on a coupe. But if she wants them I will probably get a set. heh

Ford Red in the sixties are often confused with Orange...especially Poppy.

So you can have the best of both worlds....an Orange mustang for your daughter and a period correct paint job using a stock color

Assuming the latter is any importance.

I found this 1965 Mustang Coupe in Poppy Red:

www.motorcities.com/contents/03JD9485534002.html

Haven't been able to find anything on Signal Flare red yet. Do a search on the link to the web site above. They have a lot of classic cars and Mustangs in their photo gallery that you might find helpful.

every supplier has thier own paint colors, except when it comes to certain paint codes. but there are so many variations of every color. ecspecially when it comes to reds, yellows, and oranges. they are pretty much variations of the same color from one end of the spectrum to the other. but each supplier will have different names for the same colors because of copyright enfringments. man, that kind of sounded like I knew what I was talking about. Anyway, If you find a color that you like, not only ask what color, but what company. hope this helps

I realize I am a little late in the game adding my input here but, have you seen the new Berrylium Saleen S-281 E color? I would love to get my car painted that color! I have attached a picture of the car.

MCCOIGK, I do like that color, almost a mix between copper and orange. Awesome.
