Default flooded interior

sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

last night it rained pretty hard here, well it appears that a certain area of the block (neighborhood) was flooded and lucky me, my car was in the way of water flow, i opend the door to find the car full of water, high enough to get the bottom of the seats wet and water deep enough to cover your hands if you placed them flat on the floor.

i vacumed all the water out, used towels to absorb what was left behind and when i ran out of towels i used paper ones. i put the car in a parking lot, left the windows open and sprinkeled arm and hammer inside to help absorb odor and moisture.

what im worried about is that since i cant get whats under the rug and padding will the floor boards start to rust? do i need to replace the rug and padding as soon possible or will it be ok?

thanx for any help.

I'd do it, because rug and padding now is going to be cheaper than fixing the floor, rug, and padding later...

Rust will be minimal as long as you allow it to dry out naturally and completely. Keep the windows open as much as possible and soak up any moisture with towels as often as you can. After it's mostly dry, put a tray of cat litter in the back and another one on the floor of the passenger front to absorb any odors. Plastic storage trays work well for this. I guess the only reason to pull up the carpeting is if the water was very muddy or had a lot of sediment in it like from an overflowing river. If it was relatively clean water, I'd leave the carpeting in.

Sometimes your homeowners policy will cover things like this. If so, you can get it done professionally. You could even get the carpeting replaced. Check your policies on your home and your auto to see if it's covered, or give your agent a call.

well the water was muddy and today when i went to pick the car up it smelled like a dump trunk inside and more water had pooled up inside, from where i dont know cause i thought i had vaccumed/toweled it all out.

thanx for the advice newstangownr but my home is a small apt. in nyc, so i have no "home owners policy" to rely on.

i took the car to my buddy who does all the work on it, (he works at a dealership) and he thinks we might as well change the carpet. it smells that bad in there. and the seats were full of water as well, but hopefully we can just change the padding inside and not have to replace the whole thing.

oh well...there go the long tube headers.
