TRUE
Dawn will take off all of your old wax and contaminants and give you a fresh start with your new wax. This is the only time to use a dishwashing soap. Alot of detail sites recommend using dawn before you use a new wax.

I would definitely recommend you remove the wax buildup on your paint. Just use Liquid Dawn (hand dishwashing liquid) as a car wash. It has a high alkaline content which cuts right thru carnauba wax, paraffin, silicone oils, etc. This will get your paint finish squeeky clean and wax free.
Hope this helps

ok good. I'm gonna use DAWN tomorrow to wax her, another question though. Back and forth or circles to apply/remove wax. (Car is black hopefully no swirl marks)
I use back and forth (top to bottom) on the hood and the top, and up and down on the sides, its another trick Ive learned through various web sites on detailing, its supposed to reflect better that way.

its not just the reflection im worried about its the swirl marks. I'm gonna use 100% cotton Diaper Cloth. Although I heard under shirts(you know the white/black ones u wear under ur polo's) are also a good thing to use.
The way I do it is supposed to eliminate swirl marks on dark cars too. Use some Microfiber cloths to remove your wax or 100% cotton towels. I really like the microfiber for detailing. Ive heard some bad things about diaper cloths. The cotton towels work really good in taking off the wax and the microfibers really shine it up Can you tell I'm a detail freak

Just a suggestion: before you apply the new wax, go over the entire car with a clay bar to remove dirt and impurities that are lodged in the clearcoat. It's about thirteen bucks at the auto store and will take about an hour. After you're done, wash the car again and then apply your wax.
I thuought you were supposed to wax right after the clay bar????
Probably true. But when I did my van (white) the clay bar left a filmy residue in some spots. I just didn't want that trapped under the wax. The BEST thing to do is to follow up the clay bar with a cleaner polish, then a wax. That's the ticket.
SouthFlaGT: there really isn't a need to use Dawn as a soap. Use a good car wash soap like Meguiar's NXT to clean the surface. If you are going to "prep" the surface, the polish will remove any previous wax. Meguiar's has a new "Prescription" page that can give you a product selection and methods based upon your input to the form.
If you have a random orbital like a Porter Cable unit and foam pads, your Black finish will be swirl free. Use microfiber towels for all buffing/removing.
Black is a very unforgiving color when it comes to scratches and swirls!
I detail a fair amount of cars and a "paid" hobby (keeps me in waxes and equipment).
The others are correct about claying. If you haven't done it at all, it provides a smooth surface for polishing and waxing).
Jump over to www.meguiarsonline.com and look around. They are a great bunch and will jump right in with good suggestions.
