OHHH, come on..!!...surface rust? Remove sections of metal? GEESCH !!
Rena, is the paint still on the metal? Is the paint peeling off? Is the metal bubbling, and flaking away, or is it just surface rust that could easily be sanded to beautiful shiny metal?
If you are intending to just use the touch up paint, then get your self some REAL fine grain sandpaper, like 440 grit, and sand the rust away. Do your best not to sand in deep grooves in the metal. Sand in circular motions. Any grooves will show through the paint, so the metal must be smooth when you are done. Tape off the area around the bare metal spot you just created, and paint with a quality primer. When that is dry, apply your touch up paint. Then when that is dry, apply (if necessary) some clear coat. Depending on the size and the type of touch-up paint, you may not need the clear coat.
The guys at Auto-Zone will be happy to assist you in getting the primer, clear coat, sand paper, and masking tape. A real sweet talker on a real slow day might get a bored salesman out behind the counter to "show" you how to do it.
Remember, regardless of the color, fading has occurred on your beautiful vehicle. And, just like cookies, no two batches of paint are EXACTLY the same color. A perfect match of touch-up paint and original factory paint is next to impossible to obtain. Don't forget to shake or stir that paint frequently.
You need to convince yourself that you can do this, it is a great D-I-Y project. What is the worst that can happen? You'll have to hire a pro to paint the roof. If you don't have the nerve to do it yourself, you're in that position right now anyway......Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
