Default dashboard cleaners

I just bought an '05 GT. The dealer said under no circumstances use armor all on the dashboard. I'm not sure why.... but if anyone knows, please let me know. Also, what is a good cleaner for the dash?

I'd suggest you ask the dealer to defend his statement. Would he say the same thing about a 2004, or 2002, or 2000? Or, is the 2005 "special"?

I'd bet you'd find out that he has some personal adversion to these products.

Have yet to meet a car salesman that doesn't think he knows everything there is to know about cars, until he's challenged with ->| |<- this much intelligence.

I have heard a salesman make the same comment some 19 years ago, to my mom when purchacing a non-Ford vehicle. The salesman's rational was... it dried out the dash material and would cause it to crack. He never gave a name for a replacement product for us to buy, so he was not pitching another product. We layed off Armorol for a few years, and eventually came back. Up until now I have never heard anyone else say anything about not using it on a dash. I agree from Fiat Freak, ask the salesman to back the info up. Maybe they know something we don't, or he is perpetuating misinformation, or had a bad personal experience.

Anyone else...your $.02?

Regardless of the brand, I've yet to see any of these crack a dash. Petroleum products on vinyl (a petroleum product itself) does not promote drying and cracking of this interior part.

Lack of attention, too long in the hot dry sun, left to collect dirt, spilled root beer floats and grease sodden fries are the primary culprits to a failed dashboard. Check your average junk yard to see which dashes have failed and which ones are still intact. You'll see a pattern that emulates a particular lifestyle.

I don't wanna sound like I'm puttin down car salesmen, but this guy is full of hooie. I invite him to prove me wrong on this issue. I've been using Armor-All since before dirt was invented, and have yet to have a problem. Let's see the test results, let's hear the testimonies......there ain't any.

I've heard the same line about "drying out" the dash too, but like FiatFreak, I've never seen it happen as long as you keep apply it several times a year. Personally, I don't like armour-all on my dashboard because it tends to have a shiny finish, and the last thing you need from your dashboard is glare or reflections. That said -- several companies (including armour-all) do make low-gloss products.

I've been using the leather upholstery cleaning / conditioning products I use on my seats on the dashboard of my last few cars -- it's not exactly manufacturer recommended but it seems to work fine. But I'd encourage you to TEST it on a small part of your dash first....

Armor-All makes a satin finish product that does not give that greasy look. Also, if you apply it too thick, you can get that still drippy wet look.

All things in moderation.
