Whoever the previous owner of my '96gt was, they decided to spray paint the center console banana yellow. Is there anywhere I could get a new, but cheap, center console (radio, knobs, and auto shifter) either aftermarket or factory stuff?
I also need the vents on my hood and the grill, but those I'm not too worried about at the moment..
The prices for these replacements are rediculous. I'm going to try to repaint them.. Sand, prime, sand, prime, sand, paint.. I guess maybe I'll go with a flat or matte black.
Maybe by the end of summer I'll replace them with something else..
when you say "center console" do you mean the armrest? also a quick tip: oven cleaner will remove paint on most plastics without any side effects. it'll save you a whole lot of sanding,priming,sanding,priming...

You gotta be careful with those sweeping statements. The plastic may not suffer any detriment (although I'd be willing to bet differently); but, oven cleaner, as with most paints are toxic to the environment; and to you if you aren't careful.
SIDE EFFECTS are pollution, cancer, brain damage and death if not handled properly....and that means #1 use ONLY in well ventilated areas, and #2 disposing of the waste in proper containers to proper facilities.

oven cleaner works great for paint removal on plastics. i think we all know its toxic. but how else are you gonna clean your oven?

Oven cleaner will take off almost anything from anything. The only thing I'll use that for is to get anodization off aluminum. Oven cleaner burns through skin real quick.
I've been looking around for replacements and they're all too much money at the moment. I'm barely affording insurance and gas. I'm going to stick to sanding the old fashioned way. I already started my hood vents and honeycomb grille.
Actually Badass98SVT is right -- Oven Cleaner is one of the "old tricks" for removing paint from plastic models so they can be dissasembled and/or repainted.
Of course that isn't to say you wouldn't want to testit first on an inconspicuous part of the console.
And YES! -- do it outside with the windows down and wear gloves, and dispose of the waste properly, etc.....
If oven cleaner does still make you nervous, I suggest you visit a local hobby shop. There are some new products out for removing paint from plastic models -- plus the Hobby Shop guys might have some pointers....

Depending upon the console - such as if the dash bezel - typical original equipment (black matte) more than likely is made from poly carb. If its the console where the shifter comes up through, its ABS. Regardless, the oven cleaner may also have chemicals in it that not only dissolve paint, but will breakdown the physical composition of the plastic itself and once applied, may either melt the plastic over time or bond into its pores via the grained finish. If this happens, any other chemical applied to its "new surface - oven cleaner" may cause more harm than good. As summer approaches, temperatures increase. Well, so does your car interior, with the windows up, it can produce temps above 120F. With these newly bonded chemicals, combined with intense heat can cause odorless gasses like Radon in the cabin and cause dizziness or blackout. Its not always the "smart" or "quick and dirty" way to get around the work when you apply a chemical to a surface that was not intended for its use. If its the matte finish, you might be ok, since many polycarb interior parts have a molded in color and the yellow paint would come right off, much like your polystyrene models.
