Make sure engine is cold

Use any "orange" cleaner, its biodegradable and doesnt damage the paint or rubber.

Apply to all surfaces, then use some old rags and brushes to get to the hard to get areas.
Leave the product for 20 minutes, then remove with LOW PRESSURE hose.

Dry by hand.

I have wanted to clean my engines also but I am so scared of the electrical stuff. My friend's brother said to use aluminum foil to cover certain things like the altenator and exposed wires. Is there any other way or is this a good way to go?

They do sell engine bay and compartment cleaners at autoparts stores. You spray it on and hose it off with a pressureless hose. Just don't saturate any electrical stuff and you'll be fine.

simple green works well, liberally spray on avoiding the alternator and let set for 15 min. rinse with a garden hose. car washes work great but i trashed the bearing in my alternator the last time and i avoid those places like the plague now. HTH

Rob is right. I will add that you may have to repeat the task a few times if things are particularly grimey. Using HD petrolium-based engine cleaners or Simple Green destroy or stain plastic and rubber parts and wreak havoc on bearings in FEAD components.
