Since the edge of the rims is hidden by the tires, use the sanding sponges and metal finishing pads here to remove any sticky material left from the tires. When sanding, makes sure you move with the grain and curve of the wheel and not against it. Once you have sanded these areas down, you can go back over them with the fine steel wool to polish them up.

I've got the 18" polished aluminum Bullits- to get rid of the unsightly brake dust, I hit the rims with Meguiars Hot Rims and powerwash, making sure I get in behind each spoke,as well as the calipers etc. If all you're doing is a quick powerwash to blow the dust off, this works pretty good. Generally, if I'm washing the car by hand, I will still spray on the Hot Rims ,then use a wash mitt and bucket of soap specifically for the rims to scrub it off by hand. It's a little tricky to get inside the spokes due to the clearance between the rim and rotor, but with the Bullits, it's not impossible. I've also tried the Dupont Teflon Wheel Cleaner, but went back to Meguiars- as with everything else,it comes down to personal preference. Hope this helps!!!! :thumbsup

For rims you need high pressure water rinse, or a mitt (or brush) -- or both. I prefer to spray on the wheel, avoiding the rotor, and if I'm using the mitt (an old one I have just for wheels), I'll spray on the mitt and wipe in between the spokes. Obviously, not all wheel designs allow this.

By the way, I tried Hot Rims and didn't like it. Plus it's working time is pretty short, like 20 seconds. It's nasty stuff. I've had better results with Mothers All Wheel and FX Wheel Cleaner. While I can't really tell which one of the two Mothers sprays cleans better, both offer about a 2 minute recommended working time. The bonus with the FX is that its smell doesn't kill you.

Regardless of wheel cleaner, you either have to get in between the spokes with a mitt or angled brush; or periodically remove the wheels.

Biggest problem: if you start cleaning between and behind the spokes, it's a commitment because a partially clean wheel looks like a partially dirty wheel.

MrClean magic eraser is god's gift to people who wait too long between cleaning the break dust off, brake dust that meguiars doesn't even budge just comes right off without even pushing down hard with the mrclean eraser it wins
