I pull the tires off the car, that makes the job a lot easier.

On my E0 SVT Contour I'm lucky enough to be able to spray my Mothers FX Wheel Cleaner (similar to their tried and true Wheel Mist - yellow bottle, but without the bad smell). I can reach in with an old wash mitte and knock the built-up brake dust loose. The nice thing about the Mothers all-wheel cleaners is they're not so nasty that you have to worry about getting it off the finish, so it gives you a couple minutes to work.

You can use a wheel acid (mag aluminum cleaner). Take the wheel off first...make sure the surface is cold (chrome rims especially) and wet the rim first then mist the chemical on and don't let it sit too long. Agitage with a toothbrush or wash mitt then either pressure wash or hose down.. that will do the trick ..hopefully the finish has not already deteriorated to the point of no return from brake dust?

P21S wheel cleaner cleans while being safe for all types of wheels.
Once they are clean(removing them does make a complete cleaning easy) protect them with a sealant.

-I usually take off the wheels and use a separate cloth- which I m sure everyone does.
One thing that I ve recently tried that has worked great is using "Fantastik."Pick it up at hte supermarket it fairly cheaper then what is sold at the auto stores.
As with any chemical though I ususally dilute it with water. Spray your rims with just water then spray on the fantastic but don't let it sit. Then use a scratch free cloth and it does the job-it worked great on my wife's car(I had to test it on something-hahaha-Then you can use regular car wash soap if necessary. I do recommend polishing your wheels after the fact though because it will make the next time you have break dust just that much easier to clean off.
Sorry for typing so much but F.Y.I the back of the bottle states that its safe on chrome. However, I always dilute chemicals to be safe.
As a heads up since we are talking about cleaning- for the inside door panels DON'T USE "TUFF STUFF" which is usually sold in automotive stores-I used it before and it ate the finish off my plastic panels.

Question

I just got done cleaning one rim, it was very unrewarding

I have the OE 18" Polished Aluminums's. I took it off and cleaned its back side and was surprised at how grungy it was for a car with 3k miles. I am under the impression that the front of the rim is clearcoated, does that mean the back is as well? It seemed as though there was a fair bit of light pitting/corrosion on there. I wanted to go at it with some Aluminum polish and a spinning ball but was afraid to damage the clearcoat if it does exist. So, what the story?

Someone mentioned once a toilet brush and I use a brush from autozone to get all the dirt out from behind the wheel... soap and water = excellent job, nice and clean!

I use a "EZ Detail Brush"...EXCELLENT for cleaning wheels, is very flexible to get into all the nooks and crannies, and long enough to reach and clean all the inside of the wheels while still on the car.
