Default What's the best way to deal with a dry-rotted vinyl top?
The vinyl top on my 75 T-bird is dry-rotted under the rear window. It's not to disastrous proportions yet, but is bad enough that it needs almost immediate attention. The other problem is I have rust bubbles forming under the top...

Should I just ditch the top and paint the metal white after getting rid of the rust? or should I repair the metal and get a new vinyl top?

(Same question applies to my Mustang II, but the previous owner took the top off before I bought it)

1976 Ford Mustang II Ghia: 302 with a 600cfm Edelbrock carb, Edelbrock Performer 289 intake, Dynomax Blackjack headers, 2.5" exhaust with Flowmaster Super 44s. RJS 11-gallon fuel cell, C4 tranny, chrome 16" pony wheels, fuzzy dice, brown vinyl half-top, and painted in the tackiest color ever (harvest gold, that's why I call it "The Goldenrod").

Also have a 2003 Dodge Ram (lightly modded daily driver/tow rig/office/dining room/home away from home/workshop... I call it "The Big Blue Dawg".)

Always repair the rust first, it could spread to other sections.
Then get a new top.

ditch the top and repair the rust. they look better without it !
