Cool 2 ?s about paint and washing

Hey AFMers. Got 2 ?s here to ask. First there was a few spots in need of touch up paint on my white fox vert. Of course the touch up paint is a little lighter than the original paint and I read on the can that you can apply a rubbing chemical to it that will make it blend some more so it looks better. Is that just a fancy saying for rubbing alcohol or is it something else? And then second, this is my first convertable. Should I use a special soap for the convertable top or is it ok to use regular car soap (meguairs NXT gen. soap is what I use on my other cars) when I wash it?

Hello. I guess the first question would be what do mean when you say 'spots' ? If you are talking about tiny little chips, that would be one thing, but, if you mean an area the size of a baseball, that's something else entirely. If it's chips, then you want to fill the chip without getting outside of it with several thin coats, leaving the the touch-up just a little bit below the level of the undamaged paint, and then bring it up slightly above the undamaged paint with clear, and then wet sand the area very carefully back down to level and then buff it out. The color might not be a perfect match, but the clear will help smooth that out some and having the whole area slick, flat and shiny will go a long way towards hiding the slight mismatch. On larger areas I would pretty much have to see some pictures to offer any worthwhile suggestions. The 'rubbing chemical' they mentioned usually means buffing compound or something along those lines. Hope that helps.

Thanks fellow stanger for answering that question. I post pics of the one spot but my camera for some reason doesn't want to work for me right now. What happened was the old owners wife took the car to work and her boss backed into it with his truck, pushing the fender back just enough to go a little behind the drivers door and she didn't see it and opened the door and it pushed the fender in. I took the fender off and bent it back into shape. The spot I painted was along the edge of the drivers door above the black trim on my '90 lx. It's about 6 inches tall and about 1 1/2 in. wide maybe. And I bet I'll be going to the local autozone here in the next 2 days so I'll get some sandpaper and some buffing compound. What grit of sandpaper should I use? Thanks

Go to your local auto body and ask them. I do not think they would have a problem telling you what to use.

I am always a bit leary of those thing that claim to fix you car like that. I have tried stuff like that only to be disapointed with the results.

Yes I generally agree, but there was a thread on this awhile back and some members have said they used it with great results, that is where I got the link from.
