Exclamation Home Made Windex

If you guys are tires of paying those outrageous prices for Windex and other off brand window cleaners check this out.
Here is the basic formula for Windex and any off brand ammonia based window cleaner:

Add 1 pint of rubbing alcohol (usually one bottle) to
1/2 cup of ammonia, then
add enough water to make one gallon.

An easy container to use for this is an old milk jug. Just rinse it out and mix right in it. Keep refilling the spray bottle from the jug. Lots cheaper than paying for the real thing.

Of course if you have tinted windows, don't use an ammonia based cleaner on the tint since it will discolor it (usually turns it purple).
For tint use 1/2 cup of white vinegar to a gallon of water.

Have you used this recipe? If so how well does it work.

I have used vinegar and water. I would never add ammonia. That is nasty.

You just wipe the windows with old newspaper? Do you use any water or do you just use the window cleaner/Windex?

Newspaper (black, no color ads) and whatever window cleaner you use. The ink in the paper works wonders.

Sweet, thanks man. I'll have to try that. It's not a joke right?

As long as it gets the windows clean. I thought I got them pretty clean last time I washed the car, but they looked terrible today. Thanks!

You know, my ex-girlfriend used to use Windex and newspaper to clean her bathroom mirror and windows. I always thought she was insane...

Well, maybe I was wrong about the newspaper, but she really was insane.

Newspaper is what people used years ago, it works. I use a good cleaner wax on all windows, in and out. All except the outside of the windshield.

Yeah, it works pretty much the same as the blue stuff. The ammonia is the actually cleaner base that strips the dirt off...the alcohol works as a cleaner too, but it's mainly in there to help the solution dry quicker. Windex...now with ammonia D!
