You can use a good primer and sealer to make sure the dye adheres properly. If you don't prep the surface, the dye will come off and make a mess. If you have hard plastic surfaces, you can also use Fusion, it'll bond with the plastic and won't flake or chip off. I've seen both good and bad dye jobs so take your time and do it right.
