Make sure the engine is warm to the touch not hot. Go and get some cheap purple power and let it sit but not dry up. The engine cleaners from the parts store will make your car smell like a diesel for a month. Try to not spray the distributor cap or the electronics with full force water.

Purple power is great stuff, I owned a detail shop here in my
hometown a few years ago and we used it. You can dilute it
in a spray bottle 1/2 purple power,and 1/2 water,works just as
good as full strength and saves on product usage. The way we
did engines was put a plastic bag over distributor cap and use
a pressure washer ( not too much psi, just about what a car wash has.) after the cleaner has set for just a few moments , just use short quick 2 second bursts with the water until its clean. Then take an air hose if available to blow off excess water.Next start car and let it run for a few moments to help dry it out ( we generally did 3-5 mins. ). After engine has cooled back off you can spray it with Formula 2001 or Armor all . Let that soak in and you should have a clean shiny engine bay. Don't forget to take a rag and wipe off any excess dressing or spots that might have missed while washing. Hope this helps
you out.
