Default ATF in our transmissions

Anyone ever question why we use ATF in our manual transmissions. Anyone every use manual transmission fluid in their cobras?

FoMoCo has been using ATF in all manual tranmissions and transfer cases for over 20 years......ATF performs much better in colder weather, has great lubricating properties for its viscosity, makes shifting in all weather easier....adding regular old gear oil to a manual trans today would destroy it it in a matter of days, esp Cobra's wth there Carbon-Fiber linned blocker rings, so dont do it.......

It seems the transmission is a weak link is my cobra. I already had one rebuild under warranty. I was looking for a better alternative since my warranty has expired.

next option would be either a Tremec 3550 or TKO, both would require the Lakewood bellhousing and the TKO would require a 26 spline clutch disc.....either one is gonna' cost @$2k in just parts......

Then that leads me to my original question--if the ATM is not doing a good a job as the heavier manual transmission fluid might. I think transmissions should outlast the warranty periods.

a thicker/heavier gear oil will make shifting harder, ruin the carbon fiber blocker rings and ruin the trans.....
what kind of problems are you having? as T-45 trans issues are NOT always the fault of the trans, could also be a clutch issue, or something else in the clutch system like the cable, firewall flex, adjuster, TOB or bearing retainer, aftermarket shifter not adjusted correctly or just driver error....

The only problems after the transmission rebuild (including clutch replacement) was the reverse gear sometimes grinding and popping out. It was happening before the rebuild as well as right after. I was told this is normal.

Anyone else want to join in and comment on this?

This seems to be a problem with some cars. It's kind of weird to me.

ATF is the recommendation, which is why I'm questioning it. Why not use the industry standard? Are you having any problems?
