Default your opinion on a 1979-1980 cobra

I will start off by saying that I am ford crazy along with the rest of my family. We have 4 ford trucks and a excursion. We have also had a few mustangs along the way, we had 2 93' gt's with the 5.0 they were sweet. Anyways to my point, I am seriously looking into getting either a 79 or 80 cobra. The guy said they haven't been started for 5 years and he only wants 2 grand a peice. They look like with just a little love they would run no problem. But i know nothing about those cobras. My plans would be to restore the extiror/interior and hop up the drive train. Any thaughts are welcome. oh yah is that to tall of an order for a kid? because i dont have much experence with any of this and this will almost be a learner type prodject for me. Well thank you all so much

Restoring a vehicle can be an extremely long and expensive process. . . You'd probably be better off buying a newer cobra that just needs a tad bit of TLC. Just an honest opinion!

alright thanks for being honest with me. And i dont thing i got exatally what i was trying to do to this car across effectively, I would most likly just repaint the out side and gut the inside and make it sort of a sleeper street machine. Nearly all of the money would go into preformance, but yet then again im not sure if a 2.3l turbo rebuild up would be that great. I would probably be money ahead finding a decent later style fox body with a 302 in it and going from there. well thanks what you said really did make me rethink what i wanted. I still might get one of the cars but the chances have droped alot. Thanks, and by the way you are in denver so here are the links to the cars if you are interested. 1980 Ford Mustang Cobra 1979 Ford Mustang Cobra

Hmmm. . . There really not that bad! If you look at them check for rust or bond-o. Once you start doing heavy body work and replacing panels it starts to get expensive. . .

Thumbs down 1979 2.3L turbo in the Mustangs

Hey I thought I would drop you this note so you don't waste your money or time. I owned a 79 Mustang Turbo Cobra and what a peice of junk. Ford for some reason back then was attaching the turbos to the exhaust and that was fine but they had huge problems with the turbo bearing's coking up. Those turbos had no oil going to the bearings or any coolant and wth the extreme heat from the exhaust and the turbo would continue spinning long after the car was shut off you could see were the problems would arise. This also dramticaly cut valve life as well. Take my advice and run from that motor.
