I'm pretty sure the 99's came with 320 hp and I think 318 tq and the 97 had 305hp/300tq. If I'm not mistaken the 97 had an aluminum block. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. The 99's also came with less horsepower than they were supposed to have. I'm pretty sure there was a recall on them that fixed everything, but you would want to make sure yours went in for the recall.

V6stang is right on the hp numbers. But they both have aluminum blocks. 99 up 4v's have PI heads which flow better than non PI heads.I believe they both have the Teksid block so ur ok there. As far as wiring harnesses I'm sure they are similar but they are going to be somewhat different just because they had different intakes.

Your right the 99 cobras had a head recall. I wouldnt get a 99 motor. I've had two friends that had the bottom ends of the motor crap out. One of them was even sitting at a stop light doing nothing I was with him. Man was he pissed!
In 03-04 the block was re-casted in iron. Ford was afraid they would run into problem with a aluminum block and a s/c.

The recall entailed honeing, or acid dipping the intake, new catback and a new tune. The recall had nothing to do with the bottom end or heads. Actually a 99 block is a Teksid block and is considered to be a better block than the 01 up aluminum block. I've read Teksids are good up to 1200hp. Look at a 99-01 Cobra and you see the last of the near 50/50 front to rear weight ratio Cobra. My 99 has 87k miles and runs like new. Alot depends on how you care for it. My car has run many autocross events, but because I'm OCD when it comes to doing stuff right, my car is still tight.

Right on! Yeah it is going to be lighty built, forged rods and pistons, stock crank boiled and turned, block acid bathed and cleaned up, same with the heads. Some new cams, new chains, degreed, and sealed up.

first off the 97 motor had b style heads there is two intake ports per cylinder these port were known as spiral ports. A longer, larger intake port is used all the time and there is a shorter one that would be opened up from the IMRC plates i think after around 3200 rpms. the 99 01 used c style heads and the ports are known as tumble ports. lol
Oh also the teksid blocks are weaker than the cast iron block. teksids are only good for about 700 rwhp. and the stock 4.6 cast iron blocks are good for 800rwhp.
^Are you sure. The Teksid block is good for past 1000hp. The 01 Aluminum block was rated at far less than the Teksid block, closer to your estimates. The Teksid block is stronger than the 4.6L iron block. That was one of the advertising points that Ford used.
