Default Mustang Purchasing Decision Help! 1997 Cobra

Hey guys, well I sold my 1998 V6 Mustang in hopes of upgrading to a newer vehicle with lower miles, something pretty reliable to get me through college. BUT I am in LOVE with Mustangs, I seriously am not really considering purchasing anything else. I test drove a 2005 Mustang GT convertible with 41,000 miles and it was alright, it felt a little beat on though. They wanted 18 grand for it, but then I test drove a 1997 Mustang Cobra with 57 thousand miles. The asking price was 10 for the Cobra, and I fell in love with it immediately after driving it. I also test drove a Mazda RX-8 (I know, a ricer), but I definitely did not like it near as much as the Mustangs.

Now the thing is, is the Cobra's condition appeared pretty pristine. I originally sold my 98 sixer in hopes of upgrading year wise and getting something a little bit newer, but after thinking about it I could get the Mustang Cobra, but it's a year older than my V6. I've tried my darndest to find a 01-04 GT, but I couldn't find one. My price range is around 14,000 and the Cobra falls below that at about 10 grand. What do you guys think, would a used Cobra with 57,000 miles be a bucket of worms? Like I said, mechanically it appeared excellent. If I do consider the vehicle further, I'll probably have it checked out by a mechanic. What's the track record for the SVT Cobras, specifically 1997 (if there are many people out there with those)? Thanks for any advice.

Very good price and mileage for a Cobra. The DOHC 4.6's are very stout, like to rev and respond well to mods. You're starting with 305 hp vs the 260 in the GTs you mentioned you wanted. I would say if the mechanic says it checks out grab it!

You'd be very happy.

Sorry for the late-ish post, but do these Cobras have any sort of traction control?

Any final words of advice guys? It's still for sale and I'm seriously thinking of purchasing it instead of holding out for an 01-06 GT because this price for the Cobra is much lower than buying a newer GT

If mechanically sound, then I would definitley jump all over it. They're still a nice ride and will hold value pretty good. I had a friend with a 96 Cobra that put a few bolt ons and dyno tuned pushing 291rwhp. SVT put alot of attention to detail on the Cobra's, more than what a GT has. Better engine, suspension, brakes and so on.
