Whats the differance bewteen 99,01 Cobras and 03,04 Cobras??

I know the 2003 and 2004 are superchangered but are the 99,01's?

On Fords SVT site it shows only a different Compression between the models.

So any Info will help.

I am in the Market for a new Mustang.

99,01 do not have forged internals only the crank is forged. pistons and rods are not whereas the 03-04 cobras have pistons rods and crank forged.

Earlier Cobra's have an aluminum block. '99 and '01 have 3.27 gears. Later have 3.55 gears. All Cobra's from '99 up have IRS.

'99 and '01 Cobra's have 5 speed. Later Cobra's have 6 speed.

You should be able to find an '03/'04 Cobra Coupe for around 29K.

If you don't want a supercharger, then look for a Mach 1. Similar engine to the '99/'01 Cobra. Has available automatic with detuned engine. Both Mach 1 models have 3.55 gears. They are also equiped with a solid axle. If you look hard enough, you may find a Mach 1 for under 24K.

If your not in a hurry.....'05 is going to have 300 HP, and be the best thing since the "New Edge" '99's came out.

But I just don't know. I might be looking at the Mach 1 because I just found out the cobras have IRS and that can cause wheel hop. And the Machs don't.

But I don't like the Machs too luch because they look just like a GT with a cheap lip and a non-painted spoiler....The only real difference exterior is the Hood....And the Funky retro rims.

03/04 Cobra's also have a steel block due to the supercharger.

Mach spoilers are painted. They are painted matt black just like the original Mach's in 69/70. They also have the shaker, chin spoiler, and grill delete. The striping is all matt black. Mach's in 69 and 70 had the same differences from the standard mustang.

What ford was trying to do was bring a little retro styling without going overboard. The Mach motor is similiar to the 99-00 cobra motor only in the bottom end. the valvetrain is different. The cams are borrowed from the Navagatorand Marauder and increase's the low end torque. Mach's compression ratio is 10.1:1 where as the 99-00 Cobra's had compression in the 9.X:1 range. Not much of a difference but the Mach's are dynoing out Approx 20rwhp higher than the 99-00 Cobra's. Ford underated the HP on the Mach just like they did on the Cobra. You also get a live axle and no IRS in the Mach. It is setup for drag racing. The suspension is different then the GT. The braking system in the Mach use's brembo brakes dual piston to stop the pony on a dime.

The Mach is NOT just a GT with a funny looking hood and graphics. Take a ride in one and you will see it's a totally different horse. Just like there is no comparision with the Cobra. Very noticable differences in power between these cars.

Mach 1 production for the two years has been estimated at approx. 14,000 units.

I will be going Monday to test drive the 01 cobra I found and an 04 MAch 1.........

I might get the Mach because of the rearend...No IRS.

But I hope I find one in Black and no decals or remove them.

3.55's and solid axle. Yep. That is correct. If only I had waited four years for "The Car."

I saw a black one on the lot today. The flat black stickers don't really show up with out taking a second look.

I kept going. There was a black '03 Cobra vert next to it. YIKES.

Well I test drove them both and Yes the Mach is faster.

But for the price I just can't do it. The car payments and higher insurance is my problem I sold my 89 vert and will put another grand into my Anniversary Hatch and I will be more than happy. No car payments.

But I might look at the 05's when they come out. They look very nice.

yes..the 99 rear bumper says MUSTANG as where the 01 says COBRA
