IRS, High gearing, double OD trans... Road car!! Go try it out at one of the club days at a local track. You may just see what the car was built for. 1/4 is too short and over too fast anyway. Sorry...I agree with Sargin.
You need to think a little about what you are saying anyway-
IRS- Ford put it there to respond to what they believed the customer wanted, not to make it a "better" road racer. Many people who road race these cars put a live axle in also, simply because the live axle is a more proven setup and everybody already knows how to tune it. Best thing about the IRS is the way the car rides on the street- much better than a live axle.
High gearing and double OD
trans- I had an '03 GT before I got my Cobra. My Cobra turns more RPM at 60 mph in 6th gear than my GT did at the same speed in 5th gear. The Cobra T56 is a great transmission for a road racer indeed, especially with all of the gears be close ratio instead of all spread out like the Viper T56. But, on the other side of that token, the T56 is also a very strong transmission, making it an excellent candidate for the kind of abuse a manual transmission can be subjected to at a drag strip.
I know that the Cobra can be a great road course car, but I believe the car is more at home at a drag strip. Mustangs made to run on a road course are a system of compromise. They are heavy (especially Cobras), don't have a very good stock suspension dynamics, and don't have the greatest chassis rigidity either. Drive a late model Corvette at the road course right after driving a Cobra and you will see what I mean. On a drag strip though, it's a whole different story.
Even the suspension and chassis issues aside, the engine is more suited to the 1320 anyway. Air-to-water intercooling is not the most efficient on a road course. There is a point where the system just can't keep up anymore and becomes very inefficient at the constant high-temperatures. Ask any road racer who uses a blown motor- which is better, air-to-air or air-to-water intercooling? And Eaton superchargers need all the charge-cooling they can get.
Anyway, there is nothing wrong with using a Cobra at either venue. They have pros and cons either way. I say use the beast where ever it makes you happiest, because the car can truly do either one!
