Cool cobra mustang, years manufactured?

Can anyone tell me when Ford started making the mustang cobra and when they stopped. From what I can find out it looks like they stopped in 2003? Now the shelby mustang has the cobra emblem but is not considered a cobra but a gt500..Is this correct as I am new to mustangs other than the standard ponys.. thx

the SVT cobra is now the SVT GT500, yes. The older ones were called cobra's as they didnt have proper naming licensing from shelby, once that was recived, they became the GT500 as far as I know.

the last SVT Cobra was made in 2004. (03 and 04 were the terminator) there was also the 99/01, 2000's were manufactured and sold in australia, before that was the 96 and 98 cobra. and the 1995 Cobra R as well as the 200 cobra R. There were also the classic SVO cobras.

2003 Redfire V6,
Show: Smoked everything, cobra front bumper, gt rear bumper, rear decklid and lower valence blackout with black mustang letters, 5% rear front 15%, black 98 Cobra rims front, 95 Cobra R rear black with chrome lip, black scoops and spoiler and exhaust tips

Go: CAI, True Duals with flowmaster super 44's, Bama Tune, full suspension (lowered, 8.8, 4.10s, UCA, LCA, springs, CC plates)

If im not mistaken the first svt cobra was '93 They stopped making svt cobra's in '04 as for the gt500 question its just a matter of opinion I guess, I dont consider gt500's svt cobra's either I just see em as shelbys but im sure others have mixed opinions so its whatever u think

1999 Mustang GT

profile for all mods.. with much more to come, if i don't find a Terminator i want!!

My 1985 mustang gt was called a cobra and it had a red "Cobra" decal on the rear wing. The reason it was called a cobra was any 85' gt sold in canada was called a "cobra" and that was the only differance, just a sticker.

Previous Mustangs:
1981 T-top ghia V8
1984 4cly
1985 4cly
1984 GT V8
1985 GT V8
2007 GT V8
2003 Cobra Convertible. Present car.

These cars had zero difference to any spec from the usa cars. this was done for copy right laws so that ford could keep the name "cobra" and they didn't want to rub carol shelby's nose in it buy doing this in the usa. "tried not to piss of Carol Shelby" like in 2004 1/2 when they used the name gt350 and Carol Shelby sued ford but lost. In 1993 when ford made a cobra built by svt, than that car was a different beast and the name "cobra" meant something special.

Its just a name. Cobras technically are those 60's 2 seat terrors worth close to a million dollars. I much prefer having the Shelby name back on the Mustang. And beside, who cares what you call it when its got 650hp and can do over 200mph?? I'm good with it being a 2013 Shelby GT500.

well you should do a search on John Colletti and Ford SVO/SVT and read up on the history of the Mustang, you'll get the scoop

very correct, I was a huge fan of the SVO and in its day was a leader in 4 cyl turbo tech. Also reading the book "Iron Fist" and how the 2003/2004 would never have been built if it wasn't for John Colletti and his stuborn ways.
So saying that the name "Cobra" means nothing is truly an insult. Sorry, not trying to start an argument but I feel really strong about the name Cobra and what it stands for. I also feel calling a mustang gt a Cobra just because it is sold in Canada is terrible and is lowering the use of the name!
I have mixed feelings on the new GT500 being called a shelby. I think that a true shelby is a GT500 that is shipped to the Shelby plant and reworked by the workers in that plant. To me a GT500 from the ford plant is and should be called a SVT.
I hope no one from the GT500 owners read this or they will be looking to hang me.lol I have friends that own GT500's and they almost always call their cars and tell people that " I own a Shelby Mustang." In truth you own a SVT!

I know the history behind the Cobra, the SVO, SVT and SVE. But in the end the name was marketing. The 93 model was built solely to retain the copywrite for the name. It shares a place with many other Mustang models, like the Boss, Mach 1 , and Shelby's.

These cars were greater than their model names. That's my point. The name didn't make the car great, the car made the name great.

Yeah the name is marketing, But you can't build a limited production mustang that is superior to the gt and not call it something?
I think that all cobras from 93-04 are very special and I think the name cobra shows that this is a special and limited car, just like the name cobra R.
I hate it when car companies add very few interior or maybe nicer wheels and add GT to the name of a 120hp car lol. Sorry O/P getting off topic.

I agree, they are special. Never denied that. But with the S197s classic styling it was time to bring Shelby back into the fold. It works better in my opinion.

Let's correct that statement shall we?

SVT produced Cobras:
1993 Fox body Cobra with 5.0
1993 Fox body Cobra R with 5.0 (limited production)
1994-1995 SN95 Cobra with 5.0
1995 SN95 Cobra R with 5.8 (limited production)
1996-1998 SN95 Cobra with 4.6 DOHC
1999 New Edge Cobra with 4.6 DOHC
2000 New Edge Cobra R with 5.4 DOHC (limited production)
2001 New Edge Cobra with 4.6 DOHC
2002 New Edge Cobra for export to Australia (limited production)
2003-2004 New Edge Cobra 4.6 Supercharged "Terminator"
