That is a pretty heavy car but isn't it around the usual mustang weight? There's definetly a lot of room for improvement in that section but when you start using carbon fiber and fiberglass that jacks the price up, I think that's a pretty reasonable price but don't even expect to get it at that, dealers are gonna for sure gouge it, if you expect it to weight in like the vette does, 3132 lbs for the Z06 and around 100 lbs more for the base, then you better expect to pay a lot more.

400lbs heavier according to the article vs. the GT.

Is that 400lbs heavier than the base mustang, or the gt or previous cobras because I heard mustangs weigh about 3700 lbs, curb weight? clarify this because 3500 lbs isn't a lot if that's what the cobras weigh in at, but 3900 is monstorous, almost makes you think if the extra HP over the cobras even make a difference because of the weight, I know the new Z06's only weigh less than the base vettes because of the aluminum frame and some carbon fiber and some othere small details, because of a bigger braking system, bigger engine, bigger wheels and tires and the dry sump oiling system, but if they hadn't made those weight changes then the Z06 would be the top end car and weigh more than the base vette, about 2-300 lbs more, so to me it doesn't make sense for ford to make the mustang of all mustangs and not lighten it up.

The 03-04 cobras weigh 3800lbs, give or take a few pounds. That is why most cobra owners ditch the irs, at least the ones that spend a lot of time at the drag strip. The straight axle just weighs alot less and tends to hook better off the line. But you do give up some handling and ride quality. I think the GT's weigh somewhere in the ballpark of 3300-3400lbs. I defintely agree that ford should have tried to make the GT500 a little lighter.
I've seen 2 magazines in the past week that tested the new GT500 and one pulled a 12.9 and the other a 12.7 so that thing has some power but it is a porky 2 ton... One mag put it against the new C6 which ran a tenth faster and pretty much blew it away every where else too. I'm kinda pissed about it really why in the hell does it wiegh so much? Its supposed to be a sports car but it wieghs like a luxury car?

I wondered about the same thing because the M6 is only 48lbs heavier than the 645 coupe. And the Z-06 is a great example too.
CORRECTION: 321lbs more than a Mustang GT.
Basically Ford added all the goodies but didn't do any weight savings (unlike the Vette and M6). It's too bad that higher price didn't justify some pounds being shedded.

Of couse the vette is gonna blow it away in every category, it's lighter, more aerodynamic, better suspension, wider tires, vettes are know for being light powerful and great handling cars, but the vette and the mustang aren't even in the same category, don't get me wrong cause the mustang is a great car too, but the vette is a track/drag car and unless you modify all the suspension and lighten it up then the mustang is pretty much limited to being a drag car, which it has a history of and they should keep it that way but I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say they definetly need to lighten up all the mustangs and throw some more cubes in it... and leave it to the modifiers to give it crazy horsepower, but make the internals so they can handle a crazy amount of hp from a high psi supercharger or twin turbos, and keep it in the price range below a vette, not charge more for a vehicle that it can't even outperform... the vette base price is about 42K.
