I currentlyhave a 2000 Gt convertible and came across a good deal on a 99 Cobra with good milage. Is there any downside to the 99 cobras vs 00-04 years? Anyone know the factory HP on a 99?
As far as personal opinions go, I love my 99. Of course I would also love to have an 03-04 but I cant really afford to get one right now. They were rated at around 320hp from the factory if it has had the "fix" recall done. But if you found a good deal on a nice one, I would say go for it.

Get the 99 cobra! Love my 96. If you can afford, jump on it! I wish I could afford the new cobras! WOW! What was the "fix" on the 99 cobras that gave it 320 hp?
I may want to fix mine! HAHA!
Good luck,

They were originally rated at 320. But when they were released they had some intake and exhaust (maybe some other stuff, I can't remember exactly what) issues that kept them from having the advertised numbers, so Ford sent out a recall that "fixed" them.

First off, there were no cobras in 2000 cept the cobra r, and in 2002 (identical to the 01) the only cobras (less than 300) were all shipped to australia. The '99 and the '01 are fairly similar, they both have irs, both n/a, both supposed to have 320hp and 317ish torque. The '99 had an issue with the advertised hp not being the actual ammout, so ford had the recall to fix it. If the cobra your looking at has had the fix, there will be a sticker under the hood somewhere that says "Modified by ford" or something like that. Cobra's were not produced in '00 so that ford could do the recalls on the '99s and sort that out. The differences between the '99 and the '01 are that the '01 has cobra specific seats with suaed inlays ('99 has leather GT seats), the rear bumper says cobra, '99 says mustang, the '01 has 31 spline axels, '99 has 28? spline, '01 has a t-3650 the '99 has a t-45. The '03 and '04 had different heads and came s/c from the factory. Hope this helps.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but the only way to tell if a 99 has had the fix is to call SVT. I didnt see any stickers or anything like that on mine and was wondering about it so I called and told them my VIN and asked about the stickers. They said they never put stickers or markings on them saying if it was done or not.

If you want a N/A car, the 99 Cobra is a great car. I have 180K trouble-free miles on mine. I have a few bolt-on's and have 320 RWHP & 318 RWTQ. The best mods that made it more fun to drive and gave good results were 410 gears, H&R Race Springs, Bilsteen Shocks & Struts, Kenny Brown IRS Torque Brace, 17X9" Wheels, Steeda Tri-Ax Shifter, Royal Purple SynchroMax Transmission Oil, Diablosport Predator w/ Dyno Tune, JLT CAI and Mac Pro Chamber Mid-pipe. I also have LT Headers that I like, but is an expense that didn't give as much return on investment.
The differences between the '99 and the '01 are that the '01 has cobra specific seats with suede inlays and embroidered cobra emblem ('99 has leather GT seats), the '01 rear bumper says cobra while '99 says mustang, the '01 has 31 spline axels while '99 has 28 spline, and the '01 has a t-3650 while the '99 has a t-45.
'99 also has the ugly door-handle style rear spoiler while the '01 has a nice wing, and the '99 has clear headlight lenses while the '01 has the cooler smoke-tinted lenses. And the 5-spoke wheels were available with a polished finish in '01 but not in '99.
Austin also correctly advised that there were no 2000 Cobras (other than 300 of the Cobra R model). The intake manifolds that would have been used for 2000 Cobras were instead extrude honed and then used to replace the intake manifolds on the recalled '99 Cobras, to get them up to their claimed 320hp. And because there were no 2000 or 2002 Cobras, Ford had a lot of the '99 - '01 Cobra hoods left over, so they used them up as the standard hood on the Mustang V6 in '03 - '04.

My 99 has a sticker on core support saying the date of intake, exhuast, and retune was done.
I belive the dealer took it upon themselves to label someof these fixes.
