Default How can I get more power out of my 1998 Mustang Cobra

What up guys, I have a 98 Cobra with 4.10 gears,BBk X-Pipe,Flowmasters and a Steeda Tri-ax short shifter. My question is how can I get more HP out of my Cobra. I bought an Sct tuner 2 and it was pretty much useless. It only changes octane,MAF,and injectors. I could not change my gear ratio because it is mechanically controlled In '98's and the tuner is for computer controlled cars. Every other option was for automatic Mustangs. This particular tuner was for the 98 Cobra and it cost me over $400.00. Luckily I was able to return it based on unsatisfactory results. I also checked with an engine shop and they said I couldn't bore out the Block any more because 98 Cobra's are to the safest max already. Are there any cam's,or anything else before I look for Superchargers or NOS??

Like all these motors, yours responds really well to a blower. Its is almost always the shortest route to the most power...

But your drivetrain may not thank you for it. The transmission and rear end are known weak points.

It all depends on how many ponies you want to make. What is your horsepower goal?

Another option is to sell the car, of course, and find a good deal on an 03/04 cobra. The prices on these have come down, and I have seen several going in the low 20's.

Yeah I was afraid of that, but I like my snake. She's a white convertible, light brown top with same color leather interior. I'm kinda trying to collect my cars now, sold a few that I regret. I'm looking for 400+ HP. I guess I'll buy a Supercharger in 2008. Which one do you guys reccomend? Where in Los Angeles or near by LA can I buy one and have it installed??

The 4.6 liter 32 valve motor is very a Very good base motor.
without forged internalls you cant do mutch, or it will pop.
The stock build is slopy on the 4 cam timming. getting the little adj.,
for youre cams is good for a N A app. but you cant do mutch here.
Power adders or the best.
100 shot nitrous is good for stock. and cheap and easy.
Push 25 lbs of boost through that bi ch and see what happens?

Budget some money for a new tranny at the same time - you'll need it if you start putting over 400 feet pound of torque through your OE drivetrain.

If you baby it, you'll be fine... But of course, that doesn't really go with the whole "more power" idea. Your stock tranny will be the weak link/

Default 1998 power

It sounds like the SC is the way to go. I have a 98 cobra convertible with 38k. I would like to add some power. I hae a BBK cold air and the SVO side exhaust. Being on Long Island I will probrably go to Mustang Magic in Deer Park. Had work done their and they seem pretty knowledgable. Also looking to do rear suspension work upper and lower control arms etc. Good luck with your snake!

Well, looks like you have the standard mods ..... if you anything more, supercharging is the way to go.

Vortech makes a fine kit for the 96-98 DOHC motor.

I have a 96, with what you have plus some.(except 3:73's) And mine dynoed at 411. Cold air, 65mm throttle body, total exhaust change, pullys, tuned, and a small shot of NOS. Stock trans with King Cobra clutch and it holds up fine. Granted im not constantly nailing it or race it very much, but I do play from time to time. So it is possible without a supercharger. I would rather have one but really dont want to drop the kinda cash it would take to do it right. Plus the car is 12yrs old with 106,000 on it. But if I were to get one it would be a Whipple or Kenny Bell. I understand your attachment, but im with Tripleblack the 03-04 is a much better starting point. I have some buddys who have them and damn, they are just bad ass. I cant do anything with them, it just kinda discouraging. Oh well I think im done, good luck.
