Default 1999 Mustang Cobra questions.

Hi, I'm new to the forum, but not new to mustangs; however this is my first modular mustang. I've got a 1999 cobra and would like some tips on how to get mo powa, best bang for the buck. Would also like some tips on how difficult/possiable or even wise it would be to put an 03-04 cobra drivetrain in my 99. I did a seaech and didn't see any such threads. From my research the 03-04 blocks and drivetrains are much stronger than the 99-01.

Thanks

Topo

'99 and '01 Cobras have an aluminum block 4.6L 4-valve V8, while '03 and '04 Cobras have a cast iron block 4.6L 4-valve supercharged V8. Some have added a centrifugal supercharger (Vortec, Procharger, etc.) to the '99 and '01 Cobras to increase horsepower. And changing rear gears from the stock 3.27s to 3.73s or 4.10s will let the '99 and '01 Cobras pull harder to their higher redline.

Default 1999 mustang cobra questions

Gary,

Thanks for the info, I'll try a set gears, probably 4.30s and a cold air intake to start me off. If this block don't make the grade then I'll probably move-on to a 03/04 block or sell the 99 and purchase an 04.

P.S. I just wish I had the cash for an 08 Cobra. That's one sweet ride.

hello! im new to this place, so hi to everyone! abt 4 months ago i bought a 99 triple black mustang cobra. it was a one owner car it has 66 thousand miles and i have documents of every service ever done to the car. everything was done at a ford car dealership, but i have a couple of conserns...the first one is that the car is from california. so they have a different type of exhaust,(thats what ive heard) i live in wichita kansas, do you guys know if that takes hp from the engine?. and my second consern is that i just read abt 99 mustang cobras having some type of recall fix problem, do you guys know anything abt that? and what should i do? i think is something abt not having the horsepower that is supposed to have...plz help me out!

All '99 Mustang Cobras were recalled and reworked to meet the 320 hp rating claimed by the factory. You should be able to find out if this was already done on your car for a previous owner (check with the service manager at your Ford dealer). Or maybe someone here who has a '99 Cobra can advise a better way to determine if the fix has been done.

I'm considering purchasing a 97 Cobra. Anything I should know about it? Common problems? Weak points? Does anyone recommend a different year?

As with all my cars, I'm planning on building it up. First the basic bolt-ons to tide me over, ideally I'd like 400+ hp all motor. Then I figured when the motor gets tired I'll opt for a rebuild and beef everything up for forced induction.

Anyone have any suggestions or tips? Thanks!

I read at the Kenne Bell website that the stock 4.6 cobra motor can handle up to 9 lbs of boost. Check out the website it has a bunch of information on getting more power.

If you really like the '99 there is no need to change the block. In fact the teksid aluminum block in your car is what some 03/04 guys are using in there cars to save weight, It is a very strong block. The best way to get Power out of these mod motors is some sort of power adder. A healthy 99 engine could handle around 9 psi and should net you around 375-400 whp maybe less maybe more. After that you got to go into the engine. 03 cobra crank, 8.5:1 forged pistons and some forged rods. Then you can turn up the boost!

Here's link to a buddys '99 from a local board around my parts. I'm not sure if he posts here or not.

BTW: this is one nice '99
