my daughter has a cop in town telling her that her "cobra r " hood is illegal...it's on a 94' cobra.
how can i prove to barney fife that it is not..it went threw NJ state inspection ...and passed.
i need help....

If it is a DOT approved factory hood it is not illegal. In Virginia if you have a obstruction on the hood exceeding 6" I.E. a blower you can get ticketed for that (not that they ever do). I am unsure of NJ law per say but you have the right by law to have the law and sub section (by the ticketing office) read to you to prove the hood would be illegal and why. I would contact a traffic lawyer (Cost a little or may be free) to confirm your standings then file a harrasment complaint against the cop, in addition if it goes to court and you are found guilty appeal and request a jury trial. This will consume so much of the cops time he will get irritated. I am not aware of any outlaw of factory hoods in any state other than one that presents a obstruction due to height. It sounds like the cop is just trying to bully your daughter, guess he is j[FONT='Calibri','sans-serif']ealous her car is better than his[/font]. Good luck.

Did he ticket her? or was he just a breaking balls? I would do nothing. Having the officer cite the article can work for or against you. We all pass inspection then tint and remove cats and all that, so a good inspection sticker won't be enough for the officer. I don't see people getting ticketed for navigation and satalite radios, big as hell on the dash. I would do nothing.

I understand your rage. They sometimes get a real hair up their ass, but it does sound definitly like harassment. I had a similar issue with a car and had to go talk to the 3 officers LT.
I checked all NJ law that I could find on the net and they adopted all federal standards. The car was passed at a inspection station so it is legal. I would recommend seeing the officers superior. Take the proof of the inpection to his superior. File a complaint against the officer witht the state magistrate. Your daughter sounds like a great kid and she is being singled out for whatever reason. Have her keep a camcorder to record any interaction with the officer, this is permitted since he is a public official. Have your daughter demand to see his supervisor if he pulls her over, if he refuses have her call 911 while being harassed by this office so (careful because they will try and state defiance and resisting, have her state the officer is scaring her and she wants another officer for safety) there is additional recoreded evidence of harassment. There are a few things your daughter can do in addition. Have her make the officer prove his identity it is post 9/11, have him sight the law she broke and continue to file complaints against the officer with the magistrate. It will get to the point of what happen to me when I was harassed, 3 officers in my town are not permitted to pull me over without a supervisor due to harassment. In addition you have a right to post the officers full name address and home phone because that is public information on any website. I do not know of any lawyers in that area but you will want to involve someone away from the town to eliminate conflict of interest (fife and who you contact play gulf or watch paint dry, whatever) if it gets to that. Keep you cool because he wants you to get mad. When you go to his superior take proof she is a good kid like you said honor role, black belt etc. It will make fife look like a jack ass. Good Luck.
i agree with both of you...i'm going let it ride...if it happens one more time, then it is going to get a swift responce..straight to the chief, and then some.

as a former trooper and (still am) a lawyer, it could be a couple things:
1. kid's not telling dad the real reason she was stopped
2. undertrained local five-oh who's clueless
3. rogue cop looking to harass high school girl
4. cop stopped car for multiple of reasons (some valid and one not)

i'm in small town usa...this "cop" is not a good guy..bug up his butt 24/7...
AND YES I BELIEVE MY DAUGHTER...i feel bad for anyone that wouldn't be able to believe their daughter.

i'm gonna guess that perhaps this cop is a little 'badge heavy' and perhaps was looking to contact your daughter for what might be, perhaps, inappropriate reasons.
that, unfortunately, does happen, too. unfortunately, some training programs and selections processes are not as rigorous as they should be.
i would suggest you contact that officer's supervisor. if you're really dealing with a podunk local 5-oh, then there's a risk of being targeted for more attention that you and your daughter don't need.

that's not the case at all. in fact, i hold them to a higher standard and i'd be the first one to correct any er uhm shortcomings. i expect absolute professionalism.
I have a 1995 cobra and when I drive it around town I have more cops on me then flys on sh*t. I know your little girls pain. If the hood is from ford they cant do nothing about it! And if it's D.O.T. approved well "robo cop" cant do nothing. I know because I have one. I would check with your state laws on how high a hood can be for it to be legal.
