Question 03 & 04: California Emission Compliance

Hi. I live in Los Angeles with a 4.6 GT, and upgrading to a 03 or 04 Cobra. As I also look for Cobras in Texas, Florida and other southern states, I know I will have to keep an eye out for those that are already Califonia emiission compliant and those that are not.

Anyone have experience in what I will have to do to get a Cobra CA compliant if I buy one that's not? Cost range?

Thanks in advance. Always appreciate the advice.

Mike

I am going through this right now, as I just bought a Roush from WI. Luckly it is CA certified.

The vehicle MUST be CA Complient. There should be a sticker on the car. Even some sold out of state meet the requirements. Be forwarned, Ford did made ones that are not. I don't know where to find the sticker on the car. But I know the dealer window sticker will have it on there, as Ford charges a small fee for CA cars when new.

I talked with DMV yesterday. If you live here and buy an out of state vehicle that is not been certified for CA, they will NOT allow you to register it here. If you just moved here and can show you owned the car registered in another state and brought it with you, they will let you register it.

Being that so many 03/04 Cobras are modded, you want to be very careful about buying a modded one from out of state, as you will have to have it visually smog inspected once you try to register it. In state cars you won't have to worry about as much.

Hope this helps
