Do not go below 4.10's if you are staying naturally aspirated. 3.73's are a waste of money and time. The DOHC needs 4.10's, 4.30's or 4.56's. I would also get a good shifter, H or X pipe, timing adjuster/pulleys from steeda, and some good welded in SFC's

I've had 4.10's and 4.30's in my 96. The 4.30 is a much better gear for the street and at the track. I would not install 3.73's if they were free. Also, a BBK off road 'h' pipe gave me slightly over a full tenth in e.t. reduction and over 1 mph increase at the track. The BBK is really good quality and fits the car 'like a glove.' It bolted perfectly up to the exhaust manifolds and to the stock catback. I wouldn't change mufflers/tailpipes - the stock ones flow just fine and you'll save quite a bit of money. Naturally, a good short throw shifter makes a lot of difference when rowing the gears. Pullies (I have the ASP's with the built in balancer) also gave me a full tenth at the track.
Thanks for the good info... just wondering what is the is the difference from a H pipe to a X pipe.. ive heard a lot of people talk about both.. i personaly dont know the difference..and befor i get one i like to know what best suits my car.. cuz i dont fell like going back an buying a whole nother set up...

Its a matter of what you want. The H pipe will be deeper and give you more of your classic mustang bark. The x pipe will be a little bit higher pitch, and have a slight nascar touch to its sound. Can be raspy. Both sound awsome to me. Pick what you like the best.
johnny reb, what have you done to your cobra? how did you get into the 12.7s? i like to hear the combinations on the 96-98 cobras.

damn defyant, those are some good numbers for your combo! pulleys, a chip, alum. driveshaft, flowmasters, and pretty much a cai. what have you pulled in the 1320? i wonder what my car makes for hp. is it safe to assume 270-275 rwhp?
