Default What gears are best? 1994 Mustang

I am considering changing my stock 94 Cobra's rear end gears. Should I go 3:55's or 3:73's? It is a daily driver so should I stay stock. Will it make a huge difference off the line if I go with 3:55's or 3:73's? Will it kill my gas mileage to go up in ratio? Also, what is the best method to change the computer? Hypertech chip? What would be the best headers to go with?

I have a 95 cobra and I am planning on running 3.73's. They shouldn't be to bad on gas, but if you are really worried about it go with the 3.55's. Gears will make a big difference off the line. I don't think you need to change the computer with gears and headers are really your choice. Do you want shorties, equals, full length, or longtube? If you need to pass emissions you will need shorties or equal lengths. But if you don't long tubes will give you the most power if you are planning on building your engine. You can do a search looking up the gears this has been discussed many times.

I agree with 3.73 they are a good balance between performance and drive-ability. Also when choosing a hand held tuner i would stick with either a diablosport or SCT xcal 2 or 3

I don't think those tuners work for the 94-95

I've read (so far) from a lot of people that put in 3.73's that they wish they went to 4.10's. Then again, that was for 96-04 modular motor Cobras. I don't know about a 94 with the 5.0. 3.73's might be just fine for you because you have more power down low compared to the modular motors. All their HP is way up high in the band, so we need 4.10 gears to get there faster.

Plus, I also believe I read the difference isn't that great in "cruising rpm". I have stock 3.27 gears in mine and if I change to 4.10's, it'll go up like 500 rpm (maybe it was 800, but I swear it was 500) at cruising speed (70 mph). To me, the extra "get up and go" is wayyyy worth the extra rpm while cruising the freeway.

Mine is a daily driver as well. However, it's almost impossible to get some good, fun, "get up and go" horsepower without sacrificing some miles per gallon. So, it just depends on which you want more.

3.73 are good gears especially if it's a everyday driver. If you go for 4.10's consider changing tire size maybe even rim size to 18's if you have 17's now.

I know this is a old thread and I'm still searching the froum to see if someone else has asked this but. I plan on changing my gears in my 96 cobra. I drive it 20 miles one way everyday to work. The only mod's I currently have is Fipk intake and steeda under drive pully's. In the far off future It is possiable going to be supercharge or maybe on the bottle. Do you guys think I should go with the 3:73 or 4:10. I'm afarid the 3:73 will be too little and the 4:10 to much so I was also considering 3:90's. Any of you guys run 3:90's?

If you are going to be adding a s/c then you should go with the 3.73's. The 4.10's are great but with a power adder you will be spinning like crazy. If you don't decide on the s/c then def go with the 4.10's. I am getting 4.10's installed in my car in about 2 weeks.

still a stock 5 speed? its a daily driver? what gears are in it now? do you race it?

I would look at the long term picture unless you dont mind doing gear swaps. 3.73 is a good all around gear for street/strip/auto-x with a mildy modded car imo. however I'd go with the 4.10s if you race it.

Its the stock 5 speed. I drive it too work everyday except when it snows or ice's,. It still has the 3:27's. I race it ever so often and plan to take it to the track a couple of times this summer. I just don't want to get 3:73's and then want to go to a taller gear and don't want to go with 4:10's and wish they were lower. I like to crusie at about 85-90 on my way to work everyday but I want to get there a little faster.

I would go with 3:73's in your case. Espically if you like your gas mileage on the highway.

I would prob get the 3.73s like was just said above. the 4.10s are great for a track.street race car but you will see a decrease in gas mileage. and with the 5 speed your prob going to be around 3000rpms at 80mph like you want to drive.

the 3.73 is going to give you a good jump in acceleration withouth killing the gas mileage/drivability imo.

3:73 are great gears for all around.
