Default 1997 Cobra Speedometer Trouble

Hello,

I am new to the forum but have had my 97 cobra for 3 years now. Since I got it the speedometer has been off. I am sick of it racking up miles that I am not driving. When I am going 35 mph the speedometer reads 55ish. When I am going 60 it reads 110. Anybody have any suggestions to fix this?

Thanks

Yes i had the same thing happen. What i did was take the plastic cover off then took the needle off then i went driving down the road put it back on on the speed by going by the tach which i knew how fast i was going. Now when i got stop by a cop he told me what i was going and i knew i was right when i set it.

I am thinking that will not work for me as my speedometer is not off on a linearly but seems like the speed increment changes exponentially. I am thinking maybe it could be a computer thing? Someone suggested that maybe the previous owner had a power programmer and inputed the computer for a different wheel/tire size at one point? Is there anyway to confirm this?

From 96-98 the speedometer ran off the gear in the trans. It wasn't until 99, that you made your calibration through the computer. You would go in and change the scalar, by zeroing it out and putting in the gear ratio,or tire diameter. It sounds like you have a faulty speedometer. Did you put it in? If so get in touch with the place you bought it, and explain the situation to them. If their a reputable dealer, they may rectify the problem for you. But that sounds like a faulty speedo, being off that much, Mike D. Good Luck!
