There is a red 01 lightning sitting at the local ford dealership and has been sitting there for at least 2 months. The truck has only 8000 miles on it and is marked at $23995. Is that as good a deal as I think it is? I have enough money to purchase the lightning in cash (having totaled my 00 Toyota Tundra and being paid by my insurance company in February). I just want to know how practical they are. Like what kind of gas mileage should I expect both on highway and city driving. How long do they last? being supercharged and all? I love the looks and power and the fact that the lightning is a truck and I have always wanted one, so it is pretty hard deciding whether or not to purchase it for a great price like this, or hop back into another Tundra because it will only be the lightning or the Toy. I am just wondering about all of this, especially with summer right around the corner. I'll either be driving a luxurious toy or a Real A** getter! Any replies would be greatly appreciated.
I own a 2002 Lightning with 13775 miles on it with 16 pounds of boost, longtubes and so on.(JDMEng.)Tunded goes 12.80's and is very reliable.I hope this info helps out with your de.

Gas mileage sucks, but that's the price of havin' fun!!

I owned a 99 L for about 2 yrs and loved that truck! It was mildlt modded with a great custom stereo - got about 13mpg city and 16mpg hwy unless racing it. I put 30Kmi on my L, drove it to Pa and back to Tx - drove great, no problems at all. I would go in and offer low - like 20K or so, and then leave, wait a day or so, then go back and make your top dollar bid (like 21K or 21.5 or whatever) it's a buyers market out there right now and if they sell svt, they probably have L's coming out thier ears about now! Red/Sliver /Blue/MBrown, can't go wrong with a L!!!
GO For It!!! - stevet

My friend had one for 2 years before getting rid of it for a Roush Stang, but he loved it, he had high boost and a lot done to the engine (dyno'ing at 440RWHP) and still was his daily driver, it ran nice numbers and never was a problem.

The motors are hand built, not some assembly line, punch out motor, should not have a problem with it lasting as long as any other factory unit ,, if you take care of it. It's made to blast off in and will, but like everything , you have to take care of it. If you get it , you will not regret having a Special truck unlike any other out there built by a Special Vehicle Team. Like Wilecoyote said make an offer, you never know
my neighbor is selling is black '02 lihtning for $25k with only 2,500 miles. it was never even registered.

I didn't think they were that common. I know we have at least three here in town. I'm pretty sure ones is a woman's daily driver. I see it the most often. But like they said, it should be about as reliable as any other ford truck. So I wouldn't worry.

Snow sucks with them. Gas sucks big time with them.
The thing that irks me is basically you do some modifications that Ford should have done in the first place. No reason there is not a shift kit in a Lightning...no reason there is not an electric fan setup...
Even at 4.30 a gallon it's still worth it to drive it not only to work, but with a toolbox under the tonneu. Even replacing a well taken care of 93 vette still lower operating cost.
