Default 1998 Mustang Cobra engine rebuild

Hey guys I just my bought my first mustang, it’s a 1998 svt cobra. Its going to be my winter project. The project starts with the motor, I was told the wrist pin in cylinder #5 is bad. There for I am going to start off with an engine rebuild and work from there, considering what fun is a car that doesn’t run. I was doing some shopping at www.summitracing.com and I came across 2 rebuild kits. The difference I noticed is one is higher compression with forged pistons. I was wondering if it would be worth spending the extra 200 bucks? I was also wondering if I would notice any difference and the pros and cons of both kits?

Here is the link comparing the 2 kits

Thanks
-Chris

When doing a rebuild never skimp on cash. If you have a $200 difference of course go with forged. The other option is hyperautic pistons. Forged metal doesn't expand like cast or the non-forged kit your looking at. Higher compression is better for an N/A build as opposed to turbo. I would always choose Forged. I run a 99 Audi A4 Turbo with 26psi with MAHLE forged pistons. You could NEVER do that on cast pistons. Do make sure you get a high flow oil pump as that was probably the culprit in the wrist pin damage.

Thank you so much. I belive the $200 is well worth the money from a performance stand point and also just for the durability of the car.

So the project begins, so far I have drained all fluids and disconnected everything under the hood. I jacked the car up to unbolt the tranny, but I’m waiting on a engine lift but one should be here soon

Now it depends. You said the extra $200 kit is higher compression? Higher compression means you can't boost it as high as a lower compression engine if you decide to do a forced induction. If all thing being equal other than the compression, AND you plan on ever going with turbo or supercharger, I'd stay with the lower compression kit.
