Default 2001 Mustang cobra oil cooler replacement?

My 01 Cobra is leaking at the oil cooler, the Ford dealership wants $500.00 to fix. How much cheaper can I do this myself, and to state the obvious, How much trouble is the job?

I would drain the coolant and oil. take the hoses off and remove the oil cooler part from the block and i believe it has a gasket on the back. it's not hard to remove and i would check to see if that gasket is bad. it's been a few years since i've taken one off.

Thanks for the reply, it's going to be a week or so before I can work on it due to the Christmas season. I will give your advice a try, and enlist my friends to help, after all what are friends for. Thanks.

I have the same problem...Did you get a gasket...Did you get it fixed.? If so do you have a part #. I have a 99 GT and I have a one piece water -oil cooler and I think the gasket is bad since I tried everything else already.

I just fixed mine last week, when I rebuilt my motor I used the original oil cooler to engine block gasket cause it looked OK but it leaked on me. It's a 30 minute job if you have a lift 45 with jack stands. First loosen the coolant line and let it drain in a pan, then take off the oil filter (you don't need to drain the oil from the crankcase) next use an allen socket to loosen the threading piece, check to see if that o-ring inside is damaged if not loosen the 3 bolts that secure the housing to the block (you'll need a swivel extension to get the top one) pull the piece out and change the gasket making sure all the mating surfaces are smooth, then your DONE! $500 dollars for that is Total Robbery!
The gasket is $18-$20! It's a Great feeling seeing my garage floor nice and dry, for a second I thought the oil pan gasket was leaking on the New motor and that would have been a nightmare!

I removed the threaded piece (where the oil filter attachs) to inspect it and just noticed it had two threaded ends and a smooth area in between. Does the o ring belong somewhere on on that threaded piece? Where would I get that o ring (part number if you have)? Also if I have to replace the gasket where would I get one (part number) from Ford, etc... I know...I know lots of questiosns but I'm swimming in oil in my gargage!!! lol...Thanks!

I'm not familiar with how the iron block 2V would have a setup like mine? So your saying you have an oil cooler exactly like the 99 Cobra? And yes there should be an orange O-Ring about 2/3rds the way down the threaded piece, when they go bad oil leaks out the bottom of the filter, have you pinpointed the exact area of the leak?If its at the filter that's your problem. So your saying Nothing is in that slotted smooth area? If I was you I'd put an o-ring in there and see if that stops the leak before you take the rest apart..
You would have to get that at a Ford Dealership..

Thanks for all of your help...I'll try the o ring first and go from there...Hopefully I won't have to change a gasket on this thing. This part is really had to find anywhere so I'm hoping I don't have to replace it.

Like I said the Dealership will have the O-Ring and gasket and if it's not in stock at their location I'm sure they could locate them for you. I doubt the corner auto parts store is gonna have those.

Default 2001 cobra oil cooler

I signed in and enjoyed reading your conservation. I'm going to the Ford dealership and see if they will get a gasket set for the oil cooler. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks,

Well, after tinkering with the oil cooler it stoped leaking. That was several months ago. Guess what I found in the driveway today?Yes, OIL, the leak has returned. My question is will Ford Racing's oil cooler part #M6642-SC46 replace the factory one part #F8Z6A642BA ?

Thanks

I replaced the o-rings and gaskets in mine ... now have a (very slow) coolant leak when the car's cold. I think if I'd just tightened up the threaded oil filter mounting bolt, it probably would've fixed the oil leak without creating further problems.

The Ford Racing cooler looks like it's a universal-fit part that installs between the oil filter and its mount ... so it would go between the factory oil cooler and the oil filter, not bolt on in place of the factory one.

Default Thanks

Thank You, I'll take your advice and tinker some more. You are right, It is only leaking when it's cold outside. Here in VA the weather has been up and down and it's only leaked twice in the past month. Both times in the morning.

Thanks, tim in VA
