Smile 1999 Mustang SVT Cobra - Best Timing advance?

Hi all,

I have a 1999 4.6l SVT Cobra Engine and I am running Weber Carburettors on it with an MSD Ignition and Coil on plugs.

I wanted to ask what the best settings are for the timing advance to ensure maximum performance?

I currently have settings at:
1,000RPM - 10 degrees
3,000RPM - 20 degrees
4,000RPM - 26 degrees
(Timing curve gradually increasing all the way from 10 to 26)

I want to get the max HP out of the engine but of course...dont want to blow a hole in the pistons. Any recommnedations would be greatly apprecaited.

Thanks
Luke

Turn the timing up to the point of detonation (you'll ear it wanna set a hole in the piston), then back it off 2° and that should get you in the performance ball park.

Ok, but dont I have to have it at 10 degrees or so at 1,000 RPM? Otherwise the thing will be a nightmare to start.

Also, if it is around 25 degrees then at what point do I set it to this? 2,000rpm, 3,000rpm? and then hold it throughout the rev range at 25 degrees? I am using a digital MSD ignition system, not the standard.

If those are your current settings, and you don't hear any knocking (detonation) your fine. Depending on your mods, would be the way to set your timing table. My 96 is set at 12 degrees initial timing, but that's a heavily modded motor w/402rwhp and 418rwtq, and 396rwtq of the 418rwtq comes in at 2200 RPM. Complete forged internals. And the 89 Notch you see to the left, that is set at 14 degrees initial timing but that's a completely different animal, Mike.
