Default Which is easier?

I have a 99 Cobra. What all would be involved to switch over to 03-04 rear end? Is it easier to switch the parts or just get an 03-04 IRS?

I believe the 03/04 IRS is nearly a direct bolt on. Just three holes to drill out.

I already have an IRS. What I'm wondering is if it's easier or cheaper to just replace 03-04 IRS specific parts into my 99 IRS? Or just switch out the whole IRS?

personally, i wouldnt do either. The minimal benefit hardly outweighs the cost and imho i think that if anything, so long as you aren't autocrossing or something, I would swap in a solid axle. What makes you want to take on this project in the first place?

Well that's the thing I do autocross the car. And when I put the Hellion kit on, I'm afraid I'll rip up the IRS.

If you are referring to the Hellion twin turbo kit, I'm not thinking the 03-04 Cobra IRS is up to that task without additional beefing. I'm not sure your engine internals are up to that task with out some forged internals or a very safe tune. Have you obtained the info as to what specific parts were upgraded on the 03-04 cars from your car? I think I would drop by Ford and see which parts in particular were different. I'm leaning more towards running what you got it until something goes bang and then replace the culprit with a stronger part.

Granted the axle shafts are stronger in the 03-04's but like others have said if you plan on putting that much power to the ground the rear end is gonna be the weak link with the stock IRS setup!
And if I'm not mistaken the center sections are the same for all years?
Also check the Steeda catalogue they have aftermarket parts that help strengthen our rears like weld in Frame Brackets and differential girdles..

Actually I'm looking at the single turbo set up. Depending on wether I rebuild the engine while in there or not will determine the boost. But eventually I am going to be in the realm of 500-600rwhp. Anymore and autocross will be out, actually I'd be pushing it there. But other than the axles I'm wondering what I'd have to change. I know 99 IRS is 28 spline and 03-04's are 31 spline.
