Default 1997 Cobra Dead Cylinder

I just picked up a 1997 cobra that had a miss. I got the car for next to nothing so I wasnt to worried about it. It is either cylinder 5 or 1 but I ran a compression test and it only has about 10-15psi of pressure. Any ideas of what could cause this? Ive heard a couple things about a valve being stuck open but im not to sure. Please give me any ideas, thanks

a leak down test will tell you what is broke. Rings or valves. One of them is bad

Default Cobra Problem

Well if it comes out to be the rings is that something that can be done with the motor still in the car? Im used to building foxbodys and this is a big chnge for me.

It is still a fox chassis. If you have time under a fox body, it is the same chassis. The drive train is what is different.
I would get a plan for what I wanted out of the car.
Sounds like it doesn't look that good and has had a hard life?
If so I would use it as a race car.

The amount of labor to pull heads, manifolds and all pumps etc.. Is not worth Not rebuilding the engine.(or at least a good used one) There is most likely damage in the cylinder that is why the compression is so low. I would do a leak down test , pull a valve cover or better yet get your hands on a bore"o" scope. (this thing is the sh!t, its a little video camera with a goose neck lens. you put it in the spark plug hole to see damage)
It would save you the labor of pulling the engine apart. You could pull the motor and just put your new one in.

A new engine from ford with a 3 year warranty is around $4500
A motor built by a good builder better rods and bearings and pistons $5500 and up
There are a bunch of really good builders. dss racing is big ford.

If you have never driven a fresh 1997 32 valve early cobra. They are a blast to drive and handle well. You get 1000 rpm more rev than a 5.0L and is over 300 hp stock, put gears in the rear end and good exhaust. And you have a pretty fast street car

I appreciate that. I just built a DSS 331 stroker for my 88 notch with some trick flow heads and a 175 shot of nitrous so im pretty familiar with motors. I just saw this car in the trading post for cheap and picked it up. Suprisingly a older man had it and the body is 100 percent no dings or dents and tha paint looks brand new. The motor has a slight miss and i assume thats why he was getting rid of it. Im gonna try a leak down test but im already assured that it is the rings just wanted to hear it from a few other people.

Rebuild it, forged internals, H beam rods not I beam they're stronger. Custom ground cams, etc. I did mine with a Tecksid Aluminum Block. I have the original motor, on my engine stand now just waiting to be done. And I'm disabled, pull the whole thing out through the bottom. Really it's not that bad, Mike. SCT Tuner. 1996 SVT Cobra Convertible, 402rwhp. and 418rwtq, N/A.
