Default need keys for a 1997 cobra

Both sets of my keys and fobs burned in a fire. The local dealer wants $200 per key set. I have found keys online for $19, fobs for $39, but the local dealer wants $75 each to program.
Any help?
Can tow the vehicle within say 150 miles of Princeton Ky, 42445. The tow vehicle, a 2005 explorer has lost 1 set in the fire also.
Thank

They way Ford has set up their system you need two already programmed key to program a third (using your car/truck as a programmer). If you don't have two you need to have a dealer program them. I had a spare key made right away, so if I lost one I would still have two to program.

Yes with one key on a 97 what you do is put the key in and turn it on to just run not start pull that key out thin put new key in to run waite apr 1 min turn it off thin start the car I did this win I got exter key for my 97 if you don't have any keys you will need someone or ford to program (1) but you need (1) that is program into the System for A 1997 . I also have a 2000 Ranger and it Needs (2) keys to re-program a new key into system

All I have left is (1) dummy key which can open the doors and allow the engine to run for a very brief period.
I am impressed by the activity on this forum, should anyone from a dealership is West Kentucky be exposed to this, please contact me, we would like to start driving this car again. The fire was Feb 5th, not exactly the time of year for a convertable......

thats bull crap tell the dealer to freakin program your car for free. It takes like 1 min. Be careful on which one you buy because i bought a keyless entry for cheap and it didn't work. But the mechanic just got into the car turned it to the on position then off like 20 times. What I am trying to say is tell the mechanic to do you a 1 min favor.

Only to unlock the door, a second key can not be made without paying the programming fee.

Try it with a Cobra convertable, even the Ford dealer I have bought 5 vehicles from in the last 20 years wants $75 a piece.
Bull yes, reality, yes too, thus this post and why I will tow it 150 miles and get multiple keys made for it and my explorer if someone can verify they can do this, or works in a dealership that will want my future business. I want a 2010 Transit Connect 1.8 TDI when available in the US, will even pre-order-help me out....

I say just get the keys online, and pay the dealer to program one of them. Then try to program the second key yourself.

It sucks, but thats what they set it upo like that for. So they can suck more money out of us.

Let it be a lesson, dont keep all your spare keys in the same place ( I guess having a house fire really kinda ruins everything though). sorry about your misfortune. good luck with the other stuff.

PS:::Most programming instructions can be found with about 15 min of google-ing. I have written a thread on here about it for FOBs for my '94. At some point you may be forced to go to the dealer though (like with the chipped keys)

Some good news
I just returned from Parker Ford in Murray KY.
They scheduled an appointment, supplied (3) key blanks, programmed all 3 for a total of $108.00.
Yes, I will store al of them in different places-my next problem is I will forget where I put them...
