Unhappy Speedometer died, code P0720

Hello Everyone,

I've got a 99 Cobra I picked up a few weeks ago that I love to drive, but the other night as I pulled away from a friend's house I noticed that not only my speedometer had failed (sitting on the peg) but my odometer had gone with it. A Service Engine Soon light came on, followed by the odometer registering only dashes. We pulled the code to find out it was "P0720 Vehicle Output Speed Sensor Malfunction".

I checked all the relevant fuses and none of them are blown. We found a slightly melted section of the wiring harness that runs behind the engine with barely exposed strands of a gray/red wire. We taped everything up and rerouted the harness to prevent any further melting unfortunately this did not fix the problem.

I've tried to source an output speed sensor but nobody seems to have one, not even the ford dealerships in the MA/NH area. It also seems like a simple part that isn't likely to fail.

Has anyone had a similar issue and can point me in the right direction? I tried the search but could not find anything relevant. I desperately want to get this beast up and running again so any help would be greatly appreciated!

well i just searched for about a minute and found one on ebay for $29.95 brand new. You can find really good items off of ebay and if you don't want to set up an account most likely you can just go to the bidders store. Go to ebay type in speed sensor mustang. Good luck
