Default 1997 Mustang cobra tire clearance

im getting ready to pick up a set of 18x9 saleen rims for my cobra...i just lowered it with the h&r spring kit ive got 255-50-17 with the stock rims rite now and they have very little clearance when i hit a bump they rub the the fender wells my question is if i get the saleens they come with 255-35 -18 tires would they clear it or would i be better of getting 17 inch rims instead ...does anybody have a lowerd car with a 255-35-18 tire and are there any problems with it?

I have 275/35/18s on my 1995 Saleen with Speedline rims, it's tight, the car is lowered, I only experience rubbing when the tires are turned to near lock...I got the car this way, so if 17s are an option, you'd probably be better off, a) tires are cheaper and easier to find b) less clearance problems, you'll need caster/camber plates as well if you don't already have them to get the car to drive right

Here's a shot of my Cobra with 17s and 255/40/17s, lowered 2.25", it's perfect for real world driving

By switching from the 255/50/17 to a 255/35/18 you get the following difference:
circumference 84.9" to 78.6"
diameter 27" to 25"
Your speedo will be too fast by 7.4%. Meaning when your speedo reads 60mph, you're actually going 55.5mph.
So in all the tire will be slightly smaller. Since you'renot rubbing badly now, your chances of rubbing will actually decrease. Plus it will look better because your sidewall measurement goes from 5" to 3.5".
Now I run 265/35/zr18's on the front, and the only rubbing I get is when the wheel is all the way left or right. I run 295/35/zr18's on the rear with no clearance issues. I run Kenny Brown progressive rate springs on my car and it sits fairly low. I attached a pic so you can see how it sits, and how the tires look.

+1, you'll be good to go. My 97 Saleen had 18X9 up front with 275 35 18's with H&R's and it was fine. But after the 5.4 swap, i did have to go back to stock springs but you couldn't tell due to the 5.4 extra weight.
