1999 Mustang cobra Clutch kit, what do u recomend?
I'm going to replace my clutch on a 1999 Cobra convertable, the car is mostly stock with a magnaflow exhaust and a few other minor upgrades. The car will be used as a daily driver with some hotrodding mixed in.
I'm going to put a full cluch kit in it, idle bearing, TOB, Clutch, PP. What's the most bang for my buck? How hard is it to do myself if I have a hoist available?
I'm pretty certain the clutch is original and lasted 75000 miles, it still does not slip at all, but I think the TOB is making noise, so here I go.
If you go to americanmuscle.com they have some good deals. They have a ram clutch which is rated for 450 HP for $270 which is prob more than you will have untill you force induct your vehichle. It should come with all the items you need for install. Plus free shipping. As far as installing your clutch all you need to do is drop the transmission. You could prob take the motor mounts off and jack the motor back a little to make things more accesible. If you do this put a piece of wood between the jack and oil pan though, and dont jack up to far.
Either replace the flywheel or plan on having it resurfaced at a machine shop. Resurfacing would probably be cheaper but, to minimize down time, make an appointment or you will lose a day. Usually, you drop it off in the morning and pick it up in the afternoon. Last time I did it, it was $40 or so.
Oh, I would not remove the motor mounts. You do need to tip the motor up to reach the top two tranny bolt (using long extensions) but be careful ss there is a bolt near one of the heater hoses (rear of the engine) that will puncture the heater hose. Just saw that bolt off with a hacksaw to shorten it and you should be ok.
Dropping a tranny, if you have never done it, isn't the easiest job in the world - plan on two guys to put it back up. And, whatever you do, do NOT hang the tranny on the new clutch while you are putting it back together. Keep pressure off the new clutch or you risk warping the center section and it will chatter forever.
6 or 8 bolt carnk how do I know bofore taking apart
Can anyone tell me on a 99 mustang cobra if it's a 6 or 8 bolt crank?
(Fits on 8 bolt crank car only)
I'm trying to order a new clutch setup including a flywheel but I need to know if it's six or eight bolt crank.
Has anyone ever used F1 Racing products? are they any good?
I just got my flywheel resurfaced today for $25 just call the place let em know your coming in and it took em 20 minutes to do mine. As far as the crank bolts for the flywheel all the cobras are going to be 8 bolts, im almost positive. Good luck with your task at hand. Let us know how it goes or if you need anything else.
8 Bolt, Replacing the flywheel isn't needed, just have it checked for flatness. As far as the clutch go with the stock Valejo replacement or the Fidanza 2.1! For a normally aspirated Cobra I'd stay away from ones like Centerforce Dual Friction and Spec!
Spec 2 maybe but for sure not 3! The ultimate setup for our cars is the Fid 2.1 with their Aluminum Flywheel!
And at 75K and driven right your stock clutch should still be OK, the TOB noise will go away when you depress the clutch pedal a bit then grind again when you let off it, does yours do that?
Brutal M
I get a dry-metal noise in the morning with the clutch out and I can very the pitch of the noise by pushing in on clutch a bit. It's a really tricky one; then I get a chirp if the car has sat for a while which is not affected one bit by any clutch movement. Again sounds like metal and comes and goes, evertime I get it to an "old-time" highly experienced mech. the dam thing quits or will not do it. The clutch actally feels pretty good, a little jumpy if you try to let it out at very low RPM, but I don't know if that's the high-reving nature of the engine not having allot of bottom end torque? As for slipage, ZERO, the clutch holds well in every gear at any rpm under any load, from burn-outs to 5th gear at 35 chugging.
I think I'm going to get the Fidanza 2.1 on the way, I've been reading allot of good things about it. The kit from americanmuscle.com has the TOB and Idle bearing included, I assume they are of good quality. I'm looking at some Schaeffer extreme heat/extreme pressure, fully synthetic grease for packing the little burgers with, unless you guys have a better idea.
Good clutch choice bigwave and DON'T be alarmed if you hear chatter the first few hundred miles that's normal, pedal feel will be excellent and similar to stock! Advance and autozone have synthetic grease tubes from Mobil 1,Valvoline etc.. those are all Fine!
Personal choice is SPEC stage 2+ clutch kit.. you wont need an upgraded flywheel you can run the stock one, but MAKE SURE YOU GET THE FORD OEM THROW-OUT BEARING!!!!... This clutch also has chatter the first few hundred mile, but its an excellent clutch...
you dont have to replace it. im sure it will make things feel better but if yours if good i wouldnt worry about it now. You do not have to drop the tranny to replace it it just runs down your engine on some brackets to the out side box on your trans.
